Our aim to create a wall which comprises as many retired (or never raced) thoroughbreds as we can and we want to hear your stories. Please contact us with a recent photo and the story of your horse at traceability@nztr.co.nz
Each month one of the horses featured on our Wall of Fame will be selected to receive a voucher from our sponsor Dunstan Horsefeeds for their Dunstan Old Horse, a high-fibre, complete feed formulated to meet the unique nutritional requirements of the aging horse.

AASLEAGH (Tia)

Performance
Sire:
Born:
2015 Mare
Location:
Wellington
Present Role:
Riding Horse
In terms of racing, Tia didn’t do a lot as she decided to play tricks with her jockey and held her breath going around the track. She was pulled up mid lap and they decided to get tie up surgery done but after this she went onto some life after racing training through Hunter Stables where we had purchased her from the lovely Sarah and her husband. My husband Mike has built such a great bond with her over the past couple of years and to see his love for horses really grow because of this mare is so heartwarming! She is very attached to him, been so sweet to see her come out of her shell. While they’re not the competing type (not yet anyway) they have plenty of adventures, quite often hacking out with his sons or his wife, me! They’ve really come along way as any tb owner knows, they’re a breed of their own! His goals are to one day go hunting, do an ODE and a CTR.

Just 4 starts for a 3rd and a 5th before a tendon injury ended her racing career. I was in love with her so took her home for rehab and she has become my forever horse. Done a bit of everything dressage days, cross country and showjumping, beach and forest. Not your typical orange mare, loves to be a smooch and its cool to look out the window and see her every day.

ALBERTO THOR (Parker)

Performance
Born:
2015 Gelding
Location:

Present Role:

Parker wasn’t able to find too many gears on the race track and had his final race in September 2019. Living the life and being occasionally hacked since, Parker has been professionally schooled for the past two months with Chad and Aliesha at Riverrock Farm (who have done a super job). Now back home, we hope to aim toward some lower level dressage days in 2021. Parker is very quirky, a sensitive soul and definitely keeps us on our toes! As my family bred him and have kept him all the way through, he holds a special place in our hearts, no matter how naughty he wants to be sometimes!

Floyd is a very special boy. With the sweetest of natures. He is retired with his owner breeder at Norwood Agistment Farm. He trialled but never raced. Since his retirement he has done a bit of dressage schoolwork, but never competed. He has pretty much lived his life as a paddock ornament, with the odd spell on babysitting duties with weanlings and young horses, making him a very valuable member of the team. His most recent gig (photo) has been as a very supportive uncle to a foal who was orphaned at 2 months old.

Antz retired from racing back in October 2020 where I was very lucky to lease him from Amy Clifford. He was based in Palmerston North but has now moved to Huntly in Waikato to start his new life as a sport horse. We have taken it slowly as it took awhile for him to get used to his new surroundings, however, he has settled in well and I have slowly brought him back into work and have only recently found out how much he loves jumping and is showing bounds of potential, so I am aiming to get him out this year to some small competitions. Antz is very well loved and does enjoy a cuddle or two 😊

AMNESTYS CHILD (Honey)

Performance

Present Role:
Equine Therapist
Honey has found a new career as an equine therapy horse for Annarehab based near Thames. She was discovered at a Waikato Standardbred Rehoming where she had wound up entirely by accident after being on the same truck as a standardbred who was being dropped off there. She immediately sought connection with Anna and Amelia, her young friend, so they bought her home instead of the horse they went to see! She has been working for some three years now and is an empathetic mare who is an outstanding therapy horse. She is particularly good with teenage girls and women’s groups.

Born:

Location:

Present Role:

Fungus last raced on 30/03/22. He started his racing career in Australia then was soon moved to Hong Kong to race up there. He had 23 starts with only 2 wins, his total prize money in aus$ was $919,484.49. He then had 15 months off then came back into work where he has turned into an excellent little dude standing at 15.1ish. He has hunted, jumped around 1m+ and does some very nice flatwork. This horse has the best nature, quiet under saddle. You can crack a stock whip off of him and he’s worked the hounds up for hunting. He couldn’t care less, he’s teaching kids to ride and jump but he definitely has talent to go up the levels as well.

Squid arrived late January of 2021 to be rehomed but I snaffled him up for myself instead! He is one of the best natured horses I’ve come across and such a dead-beat (you could chuck your Nana on him and he would still cruise around on the buckle) Squidy absolutely loves attention of any sort, he’s always waiting at the gate before I actually get there or chilling in the stable trying to nab pats from anyone that walks by, he’s also a big fan of our Equilibrium Massage Therapy Pad, but his favourite thing in this world is his best mate/paddock buddy - my 16.3hh WB gelding Fred. Squid was an alright little racehorse picking up a couple of wins and placings including a 2nd in his first and only Hurdle race. He will continue to be schooled in both dressage and Showjumping and will hopefully be out and about soon!

Hugh is a 2005 Australian bred Lohnro gelding out of a Barathea mare Satinet. He was imported as a weanling. He raced 7 times in New Zealand for D & R Moore, for 2 wins a second and a 4th before being retired as a 4yo due to an unsuccessful wind operation. I've had Hugh since he was a 6yo, and while he has been a challenge I wouldn't change him for the world he has a massive heart. He spent 8 years as my stock horse alongside competeing. In his last 5 seasons he competed in showing and dressage he qualified for HOY with limited outings. He now enjoys life in the more relaxed lane with adult riding club days and small shows occasionally with some jumping sprinkled in. He is a horse with a huge personality, and he has a home for life.

Bizarre was suggested to me by a mutual friend and it was love at first sight.A huge lanky easy going plain bay, Biz didn’t look like much until he started to move. Huge hocks and his unique style was enough to make me say YES TO THE DREAM! So our journey began. Careful weekly tuition under Kirsten Kelly and Blyth Tait saw us go from strength to strength. My nerves, his nerves (luckily my coaches had nerves of steel) made the first season a mixture of highs and lows. We have progressed from 80-90cm rounds to competing and placing in ProAms (120-130) and 1.25cm Championship classes in the 2 seasons we’ve been competing. We are on a quest to confidently and comfortably jump around a Grand Prix track and he's well on his way.

Billy Elliot raced 22 times for an outstanding record of 6 wins, and only 4 times out of the money. A fantastically honest fellow, his forte was steeplechasing, trying his best in every race and winning over courses from Riverton in the far south, to Te Aroha in the north. Trained by jumps master Kevin Myers, Billy's kind and generous nature made him a stable favourite. In retirement he has turned a hoof to dressage, showing and a bit of showjumping - which to no surprise, he particularly loved! He's currently babysitting the dressage horses of Masterton-based caregiver Elle Ifill, and is reportedly particularly 'in love' with his bestie, Eve (Divine Evolution).

Pete had been my much loved friend and companion for nearly 10 years and is still missed incredibly. After his race career finished he competed in low level eventing and park hack classes at A&P shows, before he came into my life. But to me, he was an amazing liberty and trick horse and a happy hacker, who loved going out and exploring. His favourite thing (after hard feed!) was splashing around in the river. He was so funny and super smart and could pick things up so quickly, and he had the most amazing, kind temperament. He truly was a horse in a million. I will never have another horse like him and will always miss him. Pete died of a neurological issue on the 17th July 2021 just short of his 28th birthday, in Central Hawkes Bay. He is buried on my property.

He won the Johnny Rogers Memorial Trophy at Waikato Agricultural Show which is the best of every type of livestock on show. He was chosen from the horse section and was the overall winner. He was runner up park Hack of the Year and he is still with the same family enjoying his retirement.

My Dad (Tony Pike) purchased this colt in 2007 in hope of producing a champion despite being very small at 15hh. But he was too slow and always cantered along at the back of the trial field. My mum Kirsten was very quick to snatch him up. Trouble quickly got the hang of being a pretty show pony and had many successes including runner up Park Hack at the prestigious Horse of the Year show in 2012. Trouble got sold on to be an eventer and competed to 1* level. He came up for sale as I was looking for my first hack. He felt like a V8 car compared to my little ponies. Trouble and I had many successes and competed in two Horse of the Year shows having lots of fun together. He is a horse I will never forget. He sure taught me how to ride and be very patient and determined. He is now enjoying life back in the show ring. And he never grew any bigger being only 15.1 🙈

He taught me, an amateur beginner mature rider, all about riding and horses and the magnificence of the Tb - we took it easy, we never achieved greatness but conquered so many of our own struggles together. Now he will fully retire, arthritis got the better of him despite the fire in his belly, unwavering spirit and willingness to keep going for me...for us! Words cannot express my love for this horse and how much I wished he’d still be able to continue our riding journey together for a few more years, but will be a different journey now. Much love for the thoroughbred! Wish I still had the fitness, the energy, the space and the ability to do another one justice. I would in a heartbeat. Here we were, at our most notable first, biggest and last event - Equidays - full of nerves and emotions both of us - having a go at Working Equitation.

Ernie is a 19yr old brown gelding. He had 16 starts for a 4th, safe to say he was pretty slow. He belonged to my daughter's friend who did Pony Club with him. When she lost her grazing I said he could come and stay with us until she found somewhere else for him. He's been here for 8 years! He was such a lovely horse to have around that when she went overseas I bought him off her for myself. He is now semi retired and spends his days getting spoilt rotten. He hates getting wet so he can please himself if he's in the paddock or the stables. His best friends are chicken's and he prefers them to other horses. He goes through buckets of Big Red Stable Snacks and can smell them in your pockets a mile away! Ernie will spend the rest of his days here sleeping in the sun and waiting for 4pm feed time.

I purchased Jackson when he was 9YO and despite a short (but moderately successful) racing career, Jackson decided that racing was not for him. He spent the next 6 years hacking and learning basic dressage and jumps. We took part in an endurance race of 30km which was a bit of a mystery as neither of us had done it before and were not too sure what to do. Needless to say – we won! Not because of anything clever on my part but apparently Jackson has the best heart rate for endurance. Jackson now spends his days in the Bay of Plenty and loves beach and bush treks – and jumping! He is such a kind soul. After not being ridden for a week or more it is the same old Jackson when I get into the saddle. His love of carrots can be obsessive, and he will walk into any room or shed just in case there is something orange.
I love my boy.

When I first got Ziggy he was quite the anxious horse, very unsure of himself and his surroundings. He struggled to go out on his own and had to keep his friends close to cope! After a few years of consistent work, patience and a few swear words.. We had a whole different horse. We found he had a real love for cowboy challenges, doing his 2nd ever course at equidays for 6th place in the advanced section, and soon after we were approached asking if he would be suitable for a movie! Ziggy was ridden down the main street in town by a beginner rider (actor) in the middle of the night, in a costume, in the rain, with many lights and cameras. He was an absolute champ and for a horse that couldn't even be tied up alone and would spook at his own shadow a few years prior, I think that's pretty impressive.
He has since been sold on, however will always hold a special place in my heart!

Cecil finished his race career in 2016 with a Great Western Steeple chase win under his belt. Cecil still continues to be an amazing athlete, with taking me from jumping 30cm to now jumping 1.10 and eventing at 95cm with next season heading up to 1.05! He's is also an endurance machine! With an amazing big heart ❤️ He absolutely loves his job! His heart rate after his endurance rides whether it is 20 or 80k's is the same as when he started the ride! He takes everything in his stride and try's his heart out at any discipline that we have a go at. He is my heart horse and I'm absolutely honoured to be his owner.

Born:

Location:
South Waikato
Present Role:
Family Member
Retired Te Akau racehorse Chambord has continued showing his finesse off the track in both the show-jumping arena and hunting field. Chambord is one of 15 horses re-homed by stable apprentice Chelsea Burdan. He went to Woodhill Sands (Equestrian Events Centre) and then to another top show in Auckland. He’s a pretty easy going and nice horse. He’s cool to have around, tough as nails and has never been lame. He’s the toughest horse I’ve ever had.
I’m really fond of him. He’s a horse with plenty of character and it’s nice to see how much he has settled into his new environment.

This is Charlestown aka Murray or Muzz. My son Josh took Murray who was raced by Go Racing, when he retired. Josh had only just learnt to ride a couple of months before ge and Murray competed at Beyond the Barriers hence muzz has his own facebook page! After not riding for a few years Josh decided Murray could come to me. Murray is very quirky and not always easy. I’m hoping to one day get to Hoy before I’m on a zimmerframe!

Cheesemaker (Mac) came to me after 6 month's retraining with Alice Riggins. He was my "returning to riding horse" after a 17 year gap and I couldn't have asked for better. He is kind & safe & has been ideal for a nervous adult rider coming back to riding again. It took a good year before I was confident enough again to give him his freedom on the cross country track. Since then he has gone from strength to strength with a win at 80cm at Taranaki Horse Trials and now multiple placings at 95cm. He is very good at dressage but cross country is definitely his strength. For me, he has been the perfect horse!

Marsh Racing runner Chettak ( left in photo ) was a successful Group race winner who came back from injury at the age of 9 to win his last ever race. ‘Al’ is now retired in Palmerston North alongside former stable mates Chocante and Top Echelon where he likes to think he’s the boss and is inquisitive about everything going on around him. Very playful in nature, he has to have a few toys in the paddock to keep him entertained - his favourite being a road cone.

My gelding Smiley was a racehorse in Canterbury who had 51 starts and 7 wins to his name. He is now almost 22, but still acts like a 3YO when he feels like it. I have had him for 4 years, we have been hunting and show jumping together, but now he enjoys a bit of happy hacking and stuffing his face with as much food as possible. He is certainly a quirky horse, known to unlatch his gate to get to the best grass in his opinion, and turn on taps to cause puddles in his paddock for him to play in. He still loves a good gallop and doesn't seem to be slowing down at all. Smiley lives with me near the Selwyn river so he gets lots of four wheel driving in and his favourite activity of swimming. I was told by a stable hand of his that he got the name Smiley, because he made everyone happy around the stable and it just stuck.

COLETTE (Junie)

Polo (All-rounder)
Colette attracted my attention for 3 reasons: she was a tiny little bay at around 15.1hh (perfect for a polo pony prospect), she was by Tavistock (woo hoo!) and my younger sister is named Collean and she's a good sort! We had Colette delivered to us just in time for Christmas ’21. No sooner was she off the truck she was introduced to my Australian Stock Horse gelding, Johnny Cash. It was love at first sight with cuddles and scratches. Before long, her name was changed to June Carter, Junie for short. Over the past year, she has been taught to lunge, ground tie, do farm work and has recently started her training for polo. She is the sweetest little mare, always cantering up to the gate first and nickering a hello from across the paddock. If she doesn't like playing polo, that's not a worry - she is the perfect forest and beach trekking buddy and loves to learn anything new. She is brave, intelligent, careful, very athletic and loves to please.

COLOURFUL ACHIEVER (Slim)

Born:

Location:
Bay of Plenty
Present Role:
Sport Horse

Slim is my 10YO thoroughbred by Fastnet Rock. He was bred in Australia and has raced in both NZ and Hong Kong. Once retired I purchased him from Event Stars. I have had him for 3 years now and he is my first ottb. It took a lot of convincing my Mum to allow me to get a thoroughbred as she thought of all the typical stereotypes. But Slim has truly busted all of them, he is the most laid back (lazy) horse I’ve ever owned. Anywhere we are, including shows if standing still for more than a minute he is fast asleep. My parents call him our Labrador at shows as he just hangs around with us getting cuddles and sleeping. I’ve done almost everything on him, SJ, show hunter, eventing, dressage, pony club. This year my Mum has started riding him mostly trekking and road riding and she has also fallen in love with him almost as much as I have and he will now be my forever horse. Story shared by Paige Bowles

CRAFTY DANCER (Crafty)

Performance
Dam:
Born:
1996 Gelding
Location:

Present Role:
Retired
Crafty was gifted to Keith Laurence and went on to become the Clerk of Course horse at Pukekura Raceway. In winter he could be found on the local hunt field - going on to win hunt horse of the year as he was so obliging and could be ridden anywhere in the field. In summer, he competed at NITE. Retired to the paddock at 21YO, he has been quietly ridden as he has never liked "doing nothing". He came out of retirement at the beginning of the year to babysit at a harness meeting as fellow race day clerk, Linda Wheeler and her horse Joey had never clerked at a harness meeting. Crafty,  a seasoned campaigner, travelling frequently to Australia, would put himself in the stalls on race day patiently waiting to go out clerking. He would put up with bad behaviour from young or unruly horses by biting or giving a sly kick if really needing to. Craft is now fully retired, longingly looks out as float disappears off to races with his replacement standing patiently inside, a quiet nicker given. Story shared by Denise Reid

Dart is one very special horse; he is very kind and has the most genuine nature. He caters for a range of riders doing over 10 rides per week, an average of 100 rides per term. Dart is a favourite with the volunteers as his ground manners are great. His riders range from sports riders to adult learners to kids having their first ever canter on the lunge. We consider ourselves very lucky to have Dart as part of our team, he has brought joy to many riders over the years. In 2016 he made us even more proud of him when he won the NZRDA Horse of the Year Title, winning over $1200 in products for the group. Dart is now 21 and as in the picture, he still looks great and shows no signs of retiring just yet.

Sadly Departed
Gryff stole our hearts. He had an ability to make people feel good by just being in his presence. He was entered for the sales but Michael couldn't bear to part with him so he was withdrawn. Gryff pulled up after a gallop and simply 'wasn't right'. He was retired immediately. Gryff made an instant impact in the show ring. He won multiple wide ribbons highlighted by his win in the Hunter Turnout at the Chch Show. Michael enjoyed trekking and a spot of hunting on Gryff and he was always 'Michael's horse'. We started to notice a number of issues with our darling horse and did everything we could to work out what was going on. It was absolutely horrendous, he was diagnosed as a wobbler. Our hearts were broken and Gryff was laid to rest at the bottom of our garden. "A great horse will change your life. The truly special ones define it..." Author Unknown

With only five starts, Prince Steve did not stand a chance in the racing world. Standing at only 15.2hh he was not cut out for the track. He never won anything but has made such a wonderful dressage mount. We have not been out competing yet however have been doing level 1-2 dressage tests at home. He is an absolute sweetheart and a dream to have around. Prince lives with 15 other horses and has a best friend called Tai. He is so obliging and always comes to the fence nickering when I come to see him. He is the best horse I could have asked for and is such a wonderful member of the family.

I have had Lux since he was three, and he is a part of our family. Lux throws all of those old stereotypes surrounding thoroughbreds out the window. He is an exceptionally good doer, very low maintenance, and is a super mellow horse. We do have a few rules though, including NEVER leaving anything valuable in reach of him, unless you want it trashed. He has the most playful nature I have ever come across in a horse, and I'm thrilled he hasn't grown out of this. He has even got a few tricks up his sleeve, including having mastered how to bow at liberty.

NZ bred by Waikato Stud, Riley spent the start of his racing career over in Hong Kong. He didn’t settle very well and had just one very unsuccessful start. They ended up sending him back to NZ and trainer Todd Mitchell gave him a shot where he ended up winning 3 races before first retiring in 2018. He was the diamond in the rough who has so much potential. He’s definitely not been the easiest horse and is very head strong and stubborn, but so rewarding when he tries his hardest. He’s started trying a bit of everything in his new career from show jumping, showing and just being a girl’s best friend.

Kira says….. ‘we quickly ditched the track saddle and swapped to a show saddle and Harry loved all the fuss of becoming a show horse. So off we went to our first ribbon day, coming home with his first ever wide and supreme Hunter Hack. We are now out competing most weekends!’

Happy to go out alone, goes on the float to the arena for a lesson 3x a week and has started some jumping. Nikki will get him out and about for showing and jumping in the future. Don’tblamethemusic, or Elton as he is affectionately known at home, had 16 starts on the track for Te Akau Racing for 5 wins and a handful of placings. After retiring Elton was used as a babysitter at the track for young horse’s because of his kind and gentle nature. Elton has successfully began his sport horse career- he is currently eventing and showjumping successfully with many wins and placings. Elton adores hacking and is great for giving pony rides to children and my ‘non-horsey’ friends! You wouldn’t find a safer horse than Elton and I am excited for his future.

I’ve been purchasing TB’s off the track for 30 odd years. I moved back to NZ just 5 years ago after living in USA for 20 years. I took a short break from horses and just got back into it again October 2020. Kenny Moore from Mustang Stables gave me 2 TB’s that he was retiring. One was way too quiet for me so I found her a forever home on a huge property in Akaroa. I kept Emma. I call her Miss Vegas. She was SUPER hot but I've managed to calm her right down and do pretty much everything on her. Trail riding, swimming, hunting, jumping, dressage, she does it all. Great wee mare. I’m breeding her to a warmblood stallion. I have a few other horses from different TB stables that I’ve been given and they all go into a full training program as soon as I get them. I find that they do best with a job as they seem to like to work.

This was in December 2017, but I fell in love and bought him from the school almost straight away. Louie is so insanely well-loved and lives an easy life at a wonderful horse-grazing property in Ohariu Valley, Wellington. I understand he is well travelled and I have been in touch with his old vets from when he was in HK. He now enjoys a lot of farm hacking, adult riding club, and a few low-level dressage and jump shows throughout the year. We have been through many ups and downs together, but he teaches me so much and I can't imagine life without him :)

Dubhdara first raced from Karen Zimmerman’s Otaki stable. I rode him and I really fell in love with him. When his owner had enough and thought he had met his mark he told Karen to find him a home. Karen thought he would make a good jumper. Thank goodness Karl said yes and Kevy came to live with us. We pre trained him. He won first up with a new group of owners and celebrations went well into the night. He was soon off to Australia under the very good care of Brett Scott. He won the South Australian Hurdles, the following year he won a very nice race at Warrnambool. He had a slight tendon issue so we retired him and bought him home. He is very much the boss at our place. He has an extensive wardrobe, gets many multivitamins and generally is a spoilt old man who I wouldn’t trade for anything!! We have hunted for the last few years, he flies around like a 3YO, is bold but safe and jumps wire tapes or full wire fences. He is now rising 18 and looks good enough to be racing!! Dundee Flag doesn’t have a great love of being in front so he quickly became the baby sitter for the young racehorses while on the track, rather than a competitive racehorse. He retired to Anne Beattie to become a show jumper/hunter. Jayne Beattie show jumped him before selling him to Marg Ridley (wife of trainer Neil) to get Marg back into show jumping. Marg then sold Dundee Flag back to the Beattie’s where he hunted in the field with a range of young riders. He is now a Master’s horse for Otago and living his best life!! Max still thinks he's a 6-year-old and runs things at home. He is happily retired and shares a paddock with his Mum. He takes much interest in the comings and goings on the farm, always the first to check out who is arriving. Max is a tough horse who always gives 150 percent. He can be arrogant and has a ‘don’t mess with me vibe’ but he has a huge heart and he would give you the shirt (rug) off his back. Koby is one of the friendliest, gentle horses I've had the pleasure of working with and was one of his race strappers. After he severely bowed his tendon in his final race I took him on, rehabbed him for roughly seven months. Sometimes upsetting and trying, I did everything I could to make his life that little bit better everyday. For the next two years, it was about him exploring, experiencing new surroundings and happy hacking. He grazes at Brookby Heights Farm, a wonderful community grazing and only in the past two years we started getting proper lessons in dressage and some jumping on the side. Currently we mainly train in Dressage and have started competing at lower levels, turns out, we're not too bad! His temperament, ability to learn and Judges comments have inspired me to go further, so I hope we'll slowly move up the ranks. But it's mostly about having fun and making sure that leg of his is always cared for first and giving him a life he deserves. Story shared by Christina Goffin

Pixie, formerly known as Eugenie Joy, never really wanted to be a racehorse from the get go, judging by all her results in her short time as a race horse. But that doesn’t mean she doesn’t want to run. I got Pixie after she had spelled for a year or so in the paddock. 10 rides later she ran at her first barrel racing run, 3 weeks after I got her. She qualified (and would have won on the day if not for jockey error!) with the fastest time by a long shot, out running everyone else, some who had been practicing for months. She may not have wanted to be a race horse, but she sure loves whipping round those barrels at full speed. And when she’s not doing that, she loves being a plod along trekking pony. She’s a sweet and cuddly pocket rocket pony, and she sure loves her job.

Fangio is currently having his best life, playing at North Shore Riding Club in a herd of 11. He's the boss which is pretty cool. He is ridden about 4 or 5 times per week, hacking around mostly though is pretty cool in the arena and very happy to pop over both cross country & show jumps. Also gets out for beach and forest rides and while quite capable of getting a bit warm , is very reliable when tiny children have "pony" rides. He is an absolute darling and likes his cuddles, as do I. As we're both getting on a bit, he is definitely in his forever home and if I have to stop riding, he will also be retired. He was also black type placed being 2nd in the G1 Easter Handicap. He was brought from the yearling sales by my Dad David Haworth and he has been with us for most of his life. He is now 16 years old and loving life! I have ridden him on and off for the last 5-6 years and he has also been a very handy baby sitter for some of our younger TBs. Recently he has started hunting and he has loved it! He also loves going to the beach and riding round the farm. He is full of character and loves being pampered. He is most definitely in his forever home with me, he is very special to our family.

Rest In Peace Fincayra Miss (21/10/03-13/5/24)
Kyra came into my life Im guessing 2010? For over a decade we have been together. She was a huge part of our lives and as we all come to terms with the loss I know she lives on in all the kids she gave so generously to. Kyra had been given to Tash Boyle a family friend of Don DeSilva her racing owner. Tash allowed me to incorporate Kyra into my teaching with at risk kids and Kyra was a star. She helped so many kids beam, to gain confidence, trust, be the very best in leadership. All those buzz words that we know and love in our horses. Tash then gave me Kyra, what a gift! I know with conviction she loved her life, especially the racing, because when the horses used to bolt around the property she would always find with glee that extra gear. I feel she had a life well lived, we will miss her terribly. Thank you Don and Tash and thank you Kyra, we know you are galloping around a free spirit because “Good horses never die” xx much love Anna. Story shared by Anna Bailey.

Louie raced as Flyboy, by No Excuse Needed, out of Centoration. He came last a lot! My friend Kirsty Lawrence trained him and then he came to me straight from the track. He has evented up to 80cm, and we are aiming to step up to 95cm next season. He has won champion and reserve champion prizes at dressage! Flyboy flies cross country these days! This is a great initiative, and I really enjoy reading about the horses in their second careers!

Dapper was my first hack, he loved going slow and was the safest horse we owned. Last season he began by qualifying at his first Premier League show, then Dapper decided to start playing up in the level 3 test because he had memorized the tests. I made the nerve wracking decision to push him up to level 4. We then won 2 Young Rider Champions at premiere league shows. We were the senior rider for Franklin Thames Valley at the NZPCA champs and he placed 3rd and 4th in both his classes. From there we qualified for HOY (my first) before it was cancelled. We kept going and ended up not only winning Thoroughbreds in Equestrian for the Dressage section, we also won Horse Gold in the Young Rider and Pony Top 10 League and Young rider Medium in the AMS Young Rider and Pony League. I am so proud of what Dapper accomplished with me and I was happy to end his career with me on this massive high note.

Present Role:
Paddock Mate
Foxburrow Hill is a racehorse happily living in retirement. We call him Hugo. He won his 2nd start, and was a very promising race horse, but tragically suffered a broken neck due to a fall in a paddock whilst resting. We received a phone call from a vet saying “you may need to put Hugo down, he has severed nerve endings down his neck. His legs are no longer coordinated, such that he stumbles. He cannot be safely ridden, but David, you love your horses, so maybe you let him be a paddock pony so he can have a full life at home”. Hugo is now paddock mate to young horses and high quality race horses. He races round the paddock, keeping up with them never faltering, bringing joy to us all every time we see this wonderful horse, loved by his paddock mates, and with many years ahead of him. He is one special friend, he has been kept, and now brings joy to us all.

Frakcha retired from the track after a not so successful racing career. He was then renamed Eskimo Joe and had a very successful career as a sport horse, more specifically in eventing. He is now 21 and semi retired but during his younger years he was very competitive up to advanced level eventing. While he wasn’t quick on the track he definitely is quick across a cross country course and it’s what he absolutely loves! He is the most genuine horse you could ask for, he always tries his hardest with everything asked of him. As well as being a top eventor he was also the most amazing schoolmaster. I got him when he was eighteen and he taught me the ropes of eventing and took me up to 1*. He has become a firm favourite at home and now enjoys a quieter lifestyle being spoilt. He is loved so much.

I got Freedom from Stephen and Trevor McKee as a 5YO straight off the track. He was a pretty handy racehorse, winning 3 and placing 9th in the Karaka Million - total stakes won $62,515. He is now known as Reilly, and that's the life he leads! He loves going for rides in the forest and to the beach at Muriwai. He's quite handy at jumping over logs and would rather be out and about - not wanting to come home. . He's the boss in the paddock and loves being the centre of attention. Luckily he's very gentle with my granddaughter Ellie. Admired by many, which he laps up - his laid-back attitude makes it hard to believe he was such a good racehorse.

Foo was bred and raised in NZ by Murray Baker and raced under the name Furuvik before being sold to Hong Kong. One of his former strappers said he was quite a handful and very highly strung, but she got a shock when she saw him at Beyond the Barriers! After retiring in October 2019 he headed back to NZ to Eventstars where I got him in late June 2020. He is an angel to take out, hardly ever puts a foot wrong and is quiet as a mouse! We both learnt Side Saddle in 6 lessons over 5 weeks and headed to Beyond the Barriers where we performed in front of a huge crowd! Foo is doing Pleasure Classes and lower level Show Jumping and Eventing this season before stepping up next season.

He recently stepped up to 4*, placing 2nd, 3rd and winning Best Performed TB at Matamata. At Melbourne 3DE 2022 he was apart of the winning Oceania Young Rider Team, winning the Best Performed Thoroughbred and placing 4th in the 3* L class. He is a top class horse with a very mature attitude and often feels like a chestnut mare at heart!

Gargamel is best known as being the 2014 winner of the Grand National Hurdles, at the age of eight. Goofy retired in 2017, aged 11, and after having a year in the paddock as chief babysitter – a role he did not enjoy - was put back into the training ranks. This is where his career did a turn. Having been first taught to jump as a racehorse with a lot of schooling over cross country courses, the progression later in life into Eventing, was quite easy. This season Sarah Beck (daughter of trainer  Leda Beck) will aim to event him to 1.05m and hopefully represent her Pony Club at Springston Trophy in 2021 with him. Gargamel is a true champ and will always be a member of the Beck family. They try to re-home their horses to suitable homes, knowing what they are capable of so they can be placed accordingly.

Gary The Lad’s post-racing life could have had a very different ending if it was not for Amanda saving him from a bleak future. Gary found his forever home with former jockey Amanda. She gave him a happy life competing both in hand and under saddle. She describes him as quirky and “just a naughty red head” but he was also her best mate who won many champion ribbons in his show life. The son of Woodbury Lad and Princess Garic ultimately died of a heart attack at the age of 20 and while Amanda says he is sadly missed she also said she was proud to have given her soul mate good life.

Gingernuts is part of the Ellis/Te Akau family. He’s a true character, has a ton of personality, as well as the most beautiful nature, and he thinks he runs the farm. I think his fan base came about, firstly, through his quirky name and he is a real chestnut – flashy and proud. He enjoys the good life, but also assists in breaking in our young horses and with their education around the farm, although sometimes he still thinks he is one himself. Usually a day in the life is to eat, sleep, and play in his huge paddock with Scrutinize, his best friend and another horse retired here at Te Akau. We really believe that he can be a wonderful ambassador for racing and would love to see him enjoy more activities that benefit racing and in particular deserving equine and youth charities.

Global Currency was a true racing star in the making, unfortunately his career was cut short due to injury. He graced us with his presence on the track 11 times for 2 wins, 1 second, 3 thirds, 2 fourths and 1 fifth. He was trained by Stephen Marsh in Cambridge and was one of Stephen's favourites.
Tavi has since found a new home and career as an equine therapy horse for Anna Rehab near Thames and has hit the ground running. In his short time with us, he has made some meaningful connections with the children and is definitely a favourite with the kids.

I bought Hero ([hk] Great Hero) when he returned from a long career in Hong Kong, having had 40 starts and winning a total of $1,995,300 (HK) He was 8YO then and several people thought I was mad for taking on a horse of that age and mileage, but he had great confirmation and clean legs and I felt confident that he'd manage to take me out hacking a couple of days a week. Hero is still going strong as my ultimate all rounder. We've had so many adventures together and he is always the ultimate gentleman in whatever situation he finds himself. Turned his hoof to hunting and is a total fun ride; speed, bold to a fence but always with brakes and manners. I'm now looking for a slower lifestyle for my awesome hunter. I will never sell him but he has much to offer another lucky rider who'd enjoy hacking my prize winning racehorse.

We have been producing Robin to be a jumper since she arrived. We are very excited about her future as she has a phenomenonal temperament and is extremely talented. We were aiming to jump in the 4yo class at the National Young Horse Show in December but due to me being injured, we couldn't compete. We set a new goal to jump clean at the Glistening Waters series finals in the 4yo championship class. Nico Robin stepped up to be the only horse to jump clear over the two rounds and take out the win. Our goal is to continue producing her as a jumper, she ticks all the boxes. We will aim to compete her in the 5yo series next season and work towards the National Young Horse Show next December. We are so proud of this little mare as she continues to prove how versatile and willing she is. We have always loved producing Thoroughbreds after their racing careers as they are true athletes and amazing team mates.

I have an awesome story about a horse that my mum (Trudy Thornton) bred, raced, show jumped, and who is now retired and living the best life ever at the ripe old age of 23. Mum and Dad also bred the Dam of Hamish - Miss Samantha (named after my sister Samantha Collett). Hamish raced to open company, had a successful comeback after an injury, then a successful post racing equestrian career. Mum regards Hamish as her first born son. My friend brought Polly (then Guiness) in late 2015, after being  sacked from polo for having too much self preservation and refusing to run towards a scrum for the ball. A few months later, I was asked to re train her so she could be sold on. We have been together for 5 years now and she has gone from strength to strength. She has a natural talent for jumping and loves showing. She recently won overall champion at our last competition. I feel that for the first time in her life, she is a truly happy horse and always eager to come in when she sees my car come down the drive. It has taken a lot of time, effort and money to get her to where she is but when a horse has such a kind, willing and generous nature like her, it is all worth while and it brings me so much happiness  seeing how far she has come. At only 11, she has many years left with us and I'm excited at what it will bring.

Luke went through a few professional riders where he received a fantastic education and evented to ESNZ 95cm. He has a wicked jump and moves phenomenally but is a very sensitive boy and finds show jumping a wee bit scary! He loves getting out hacking, and a good scratch but is a bit of a grump who is very opinionated about things he doesn’t like (mainly baths and the float!). Hors d’Oeuvre (the Beattie Boomerang!) Syd retired to the Eastern Southland Hunt property in the ownership of Marion Smith. He hunted beautifully before coming to agist at the property of Anne Beattie. Jayne Beattie then show jumped and hunted him under the watchful eye of Marion. Marion had a hunting accident on Syd so he got sent to Northland to hunt up there. Things didn’t go well and and Syd had to have rest and relaxation at Otaki on the way back to the Beattie property! From there he got sold to Donna Smith of Dipton (ex Master of Birchwood Hunt) who was looking for a quiet TB to hunt and show jump on. Donna hunted and show jumped Syd until her passing in February 2020. Marion still owns him and he is currently in Canterbury with a 12 year old girl teaching her all about equestrian life. Footnote: Syd boomeranged back to the Beattie's yet again. Bob is special to me as my Nana Thelma Foley along with her partner Peter South bred and trained Bob right through including Nana riding him in trackwork. Bob was successful on the Racetrack with 6 wins and always had to lead out of the gates. He won over many distances including a 3200m race, which means when we are galloping on the beach it can take a while to pull up! He is not the easiest ride and I have come off him countless times but he tries his heart out and has a huge jump on him. I could write a lot more about how much I love, and in Bob's case curse his name sometimes when he dumps me on the road after spying a black sheep, or when he first saw a white pony, or a cone moved 😂 He is truly a one in a million and will be carted with me wherever I end up!

Alpha is a 9YO Ottb who I have had for about 10ish months now. We got straight into things when I first got him and then I went away for 2 weeks, came back and he wasn't doing too well. He had some massive gut issues. After lots of blood tests and 3 rounds of ulcer treatment we started to see the light again. It's been a long and slow 4 months of bringing him back into work slowly. About 2 weeks ago we were told we had been accepted into the foundation camp for Equifest. This was super exciting and over the 3 days we have gained so much trust and confidence in each other. He coped so well with everything going on, and was better than I could of ever asked for. Alpha is special to me as he is the next step for me returning to competing after having my daughter and having a tb that was very lazy.

I contacted his trainer to offer him a forever home in Cambridge when he retired from racing. A visit from his Hong Kong owner sealed the deal. Six months later at he arrived to his grassy paddocks and space, a huge change from a stable in a Hong Kong high rise. Taking lots of time, kindness, patience and peppermints, Leo has become extremely successful, winning championships at every Show. Kevin retired from racing on the 19 of September 2022 after having 21 starts for two wins, 2 seconds, 1 third. We brought Kevin as a 4 year old as a sporthorse and I (Josh) competed in beyond the barriers 2018 on him. He placed in the cowboy challenge class!! We were given the opportunity to bring him back as a racehorse with sights on steeplechasing. Kevin introduced us to a lot of good people who helped us train him and learn what it takes to produce a jumper. He won his first ever chase (our first race win!) and finished second in the next. Unfortunately he suffered a paddock accident earlier in his career with us which plagued him with troubles and niggles to his last start. We owe Kevin for everything he has done for us and everyone he introduced us to. He has taught us so much. He will now live on the farm as a baby sitter, a very immature, energetic not very well behaved one that has never grown up haha!! Story shared by Joshua Lavelle and Sacha Rennie

Jack came to me in September 2012 after being retired from racing. He was a rather handy stayer. I hadn’t seen him in 3 years due to him racing down in the South Island. Jack was my first favourite race horse and was in fact the first horse I ever strapped at the races! He sat in my paddock for several years, having the odd ride here and there as I had another riding horse, unfortunately I lost him in November 2019, so instead of buying another horse I pulled Jack out of the paddock and we started having some fun together. He hasn’t been the easiest horse to do anything with but we progressed enough to attended the Equifest Foundation Camp in November 2020 where I felt we bonded more than ever before! Since then we have been enjoying hacking out and just enjoying life. I love having Jack in my paddock, he is the best cuddle buddy and a good baby sitter for my colt. 8.5 years ago and I hope there’s many more!

Jasper was sold to me 5 years ago right before I started high school. Since then, he has become a much loved member of our family who we plan to keep forever. Since he has come to me we've gone from pony club, to just loving each others company. We've been to the beach and to the forest many times which he loves dearly and done everything starting at pony club, to currently hunting and western horsemanship. He has taught me the most out of any horse I've come across while also being the most unique. I can only hope that one day I'll be able to repay this amazing horse for everything he has taught me, about horses and about life in general. Story shared by Sophia Benkovic

I was given my mare, Je Suis D’or after she retired from racing with Garry Hennessy and I’ve started producing her as my future eventing horse. Ever since I started retraining her she’s shown how willing and brave she is, and I can’t wait for her to grow and improve in the future! She’s currently schooling at 80 with plenty of scope to go higher, and has some pretty awesome moves on the flat as well.

I took on the care of Bondi a couple of years ago as he grazed with my horses and his owner passed away. He wasn't doing as well without a little bit of TLC and he was so lovely I decided to start taking care of him . With just a scoop of feed every other day he found an entirely new lease of life, beautiful dapply coat, playfighting with my youngster and racing down off the big hills to come and get his feeds. He also became a favourite of my partner and so when we moved to the Manawatu we couldn't bear to leave him behind so he was popped on the trailer and will now live out his days with us. He is a stunning mover so I just hope he was able to show off those moves in the ring and maybe get a couple of ribbons in his day.

Je t'aime AKA Jetti arrived to me with the sweetest attitude you could possibly find in a mare. Jetti has been with us for not too long but her personality has already shone with us. As she was probably too slow to be a racer she became an off the tracker while her brother “Cheesemaker” was more successful in racing. Jetti has already become my heart horse and I hope that she thinks of me in the way I think about her because she deserves everything and more. As of writing this I have big plans with her for showing, dressage and maybe even some jumping.

So ok, Jochen Rindt, aka Beau. We purchased his mum in foal at the May Karaka sales, with our friend Donald Grayling. He was a very slow maturing boy so we wanted for him to grow into his frame. We have always been so proud of Beau, and he has given us so much joy and fun. He won 8 races for us and many placings,
including the 2016 Taumarunui Gold Cup. He is still extremely well loved and cherished, has been at Donald's place in Kati Kati over looking the beach. He will come home to our Aspin Rd place in Cambridge before Xmas. Retirement has been well earnt for our Jochen Rindt.

I've owned Mason since August 2018. I was lucky enough to track ride him for about 6 months before he retired so I knew him fairly well. He was always a cruisey dude but he's grown into the most lovely and chilled out horse. I've kept his transition from race horse to wannabe eventer pretty slow, so now he is ready to step up a level in a relaxed way!  He's also got another secret job, he is a friend for a local RDA rider Lucy. If Lucy has a bad day, she and her mum will go and visit Mason and tell him all about her day. He is incredibly gentle with her, letting her give him long hugs and kisses while she tells him what she's going through. Mason is such a special horse, every day I feel incredibly lucky to have him, I absolutely love my ex-racehorse!

Jack has been off the track for about three years now. He never was quite up to the racing game, he managed to get one 1st and liked to get lots of 2nds and 3rds. I always had my eye on Jack as he was always a kind boy to have around while he was racing with the Rae racing team. My father Kenny Rae said that he wouldn’t make a jumper and he’s too much of a whimp for that. Well since then Jack has proved him wrong, he loves his jumping. He is the easiest horse to have around, letting the kids ride him. He’s definitely a special one. Jack has recently started going to A&Ps and I’m really excited to see how we go with the season coming up. Jack enjoys his life outside of racing, doing a bit of everything from jumping, flat work, hacking out, and attending small fun ribbon days to going to A&Ps. I’m hoping to start getting him out to some cross country eventually. Story shared by Shanelle Rae

King Pin had 44 starts for 5 wins and 12 minor placings. He was always a favourite of mine and I've ridden him since a 3YO. I was lucky enough to get shares in his ownership as a race horse and we had a fantastic time. He retried from racing back in the end of January 2020. By mid February he was clerk of the course horse in the Southland region and has been doing that on and off up until a few weeks ago. He has been babysitting and teaching the young ones the ropes of being a race horse and now he is babysitting and teaching my 13 year old daughter the ropes of riding, while also helping me gain my confidence back after a baby and a broken ankle. While he isn’t a super star in any given discipline he is a master at everything, will give anything a go, is as safe as houses and is worth his weight in gold.

Shown as Gauntlet, Kyeburn raced 15 times for minor placings. I guess Homer is our all time favourite. He had been eventing a bit when I bought him. My dressmaker said there is a nice horse next door that’s been sacked and he was less than 5 minutes from home. It was a Friday and we bought him and took him to opening hunt on the Saturday and we thought we would continue jumping him. He trotted across the paddock to the first fence and that was the last time he saw a fence. He had personality in spades and was National Supreme Hack, runner Up Hack of the Year and took my daughter to senior rider of the year and then went back with an intermediate rider and she won her title too. He was 16.2hh and a true thoroughbred type. He lived out his days with us.

At just 15hh and incredibly weedy, Nala came to me as a 3yo after a very unsuccessful racing career. She’s always in your pocket and is the first to come running when you arrive at the paddock. She had a small amount of work but was mainly left to grow and mature before starting real work as a 6yo and starting a competition career as a 7yo. I got Lets Not Forget (Tom) two years ago OTT to train him as an Eventer. I worked out quickly that he was a lovely quiet horse but not the sharpest knife in the draw when it comes to jumping! Roll on two years and he was hopeless as an eventer but is currently competing Novice dressage with points and schooling Elementary. I decided to sell him as a dressage horse. But my neighbour’s young daughter had fallen in love with Tom. A year ago she had her first ride on Tom on a lead rein and the pair of them were great together. So much so they competed in lead rein classes at a local sport day coming home with a neck load of ribbons. More recently Bell has decided that she could now ride off the lead and when that went well she started jumping. Tom has been an angel through all this and has looked after Bell, at the same time giving her so much confidence it is amazing to see. Tom is now not for sale and I have to book in times with Bell to ride him! Story Shared by Jenny Pearce

Unnamed Little Tempest 2014 aka The Tenth Muse. Purchased sight unseen from Eventstars in March 2018, a couple of weeks after her last trial. Afflicted with the “too slow” gene, she is much more suited to the sport horse lifestyle. Although she has turned her hoof to a variety of disciplines, and shows talent in all, we have been focussing more particularly on Show Jumping. She placed 6th at Takapoto Estate 4 year old Show Jumping series in February 2019. She has multiple wins and placings up to 1.05m, and we are hoping to get to Amateur next season (spring/summer 21-22). She is a quirky mare who will go far, despite the less than perfect talent of her ageing owner/rider! She is adored and delight to own.

Spectacularly slow as a 2 year old (his best placing was last but one), he is turning into a stunning, spectacular Sports horse. Goober is a complete Goober at home. He has a fluffy foal forelock and gives you frequent thorough face and neck washes. He loves to jump, to go to the sea, horse trials, show jumping, anything really (Goober would be delighted to go to the opening of an envelope!). When he’s out competing he is definitely a very grown up noble ‘Lone Warrior’. He’s the only horse I have ever had that goes better in the dressage arena than in the warm up and better in the warm up than at home. We look ridiculous, he’s HUGE and I’m 60 years old and 5’4 but who cares.! He tugs my heart and gives me so much fun. Our best result so far is 2nd in the 95cm at Brookby Horse Trials.

We rehabbed him and he did race again, but we soon retired him when we realised he couldn’t run like he used to! From the minute he arrived with us I said he was mine and after his accident vets told me that he would never make a hack no matter how much time off he had… 18 months off, rehab and a few years on and he is happier than ever and my absolute heart horse- He’s rising 10 now!

I owe everything to this horse as he’s what ignited my passion. We can put anyone on him and trust that they will be safe no matter how long he’s been out of work for. In her short hunting career, she has managed to hunt with Egmont Wanganui Hunt, Taranaki Hunt, Waikato Hunt, King Country Hunt and Rangitikei Hunt. Thankfully Don & Jan Avenell, who farm in Gisborne, were good enough to provide an excellent home and had the patience to allow her the time needed to fully get over what was a serious injury. It was the first for both of us and she just took it in her stride. She’s such a sweet, honest little mare with a massive heart. We’ve overcome a few challenges along the way. One being her feet. She has terribly soft feet for the Southland weather. Hopefully the stables will be built by winter so she’ll be happy as. I’m hoping by next season we’ll be tackling the 80cm cross country courses. I really can’t fault her in her work these last couple of months. The penny has just dropped and it’s like she’s being doing it her whole life. Thought you would like to see a retired TB in a different discipline! This is Star AKA Maknificent, she is all of 15hh high and raced twice (she never finished last either). I have had her for 4 years now and this season was her first full season competing in Mounted Games. She competed in 3 national title classes, finishing 6th in Open Teams, 10th in Open Pairs and 13th in Open Individuals. My favourite thing about her is her tough, never give up attitude, she gives me 110% every time we enter the ring. Hope will be with us for the rest of her days as she is reasonably “quirky” and I worry about ever re-homing her. Currently we compete in low level show jumping, enjoy beach rides out and very occasionally enter ribbon days (but Hope hates being in the ring with other horses so this is not really our thing). My goal for Hope is to bring her up the Show Jumping levels to comfortably compete at 1:05-1:10. Currently we have competed to 90cm. Hope lives with two bush ponies - Smurf who was mustered from the forest on 90 mile beach and Angel who was mustered from Mitimiti. We started Angel ourselves and Smurf is the paddock mate to both “girls” as he has spine problems.

As you can see he's got a bit of a sway back these days but looking good for 28…He was a very good horse to us. Monica Spencer remembers the first time she saw Artist in her home country of New Zealand - at a show on the other side of the warm-up. “I trotted over and asked, ‘Is he for sale?’ His then owner Polly McDonald said, “No. This one is special.” Not to be deterred, Spencer convinced McDonald to let her take a ride on Max (Guillotine—Maxamore, Satin Blush), who was at his very first show after “being sacked” from the racetrack for being too slow and rehomed. However, a week later, Max had a new home with Spencer. Max, now 12, has come a long way since that fateful day in the New Zealand warm-up ring. He and Spencer recently flew nearly 14,000 miles from Taupō, on New Zealand’s North Island, to compete in the United States. They contested the Plantation Field International CCI4*-S—finishing fourth on a day when not many finished at all. This exciting pair have many ambitious targets in their sights and are certainly ones to keep an eye on.

Since I have had her she sustained a gaskin injury that has now healed and we are well on our retraining journey with several events coming up.  I have had her out to the beach, she hacks at home and alone or in company and travels well in the float, she can be pushy on the ground but we are slowly working on that!  She has plenty of jumping scope and I hope to have her out eventing consistently by the end of the year as well as any other local events.  She got introduced to working equitation a few weekends ago and is already great at hoofball and likes to give it a good shove! She is not stabled at all, has a large 3 acre  paddock with a broodmare and 15 week old colt for company.

Since getting him home I've only ridden him a few times and he was just as relaxed as the day I tried him. Now turned out for a big holiday to let down, I'm looking forward to some hacking mileage to settle him into his new role in life. Photo is of the day I tried him, meeting my 19 yr old ex HK TB, Great Hero. If Morty turns out half as good as Hero, I'll be on a winner 😊

Born:
2008 Gelding
Location:
Southland
Present Role:
Clerk of Course
Life for Motorboat Mike hasn't changed alot, he still lives at the stables and comes in every night as he's not an outside horse. He retired sound at 10yrs old having raced since he was 3. His highest moment was winning the Invercargill Gold Cup and a very close 2nd and 3rd in the Riverton Cup followed by a start in the New Zealand Cup but with an outside draw it just wasn't his day. He is now employed by New Zealand Harness Racing and New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing as the Southland clerk of the course. He gets to babysit all the young ones at the stables, he definitely get's sick of this but loves when my daughter Hannah comes out to ride him. He's better for her than he is for me. He takes it all in his stride, loves being at the races knowing he doesn't have to run fast anymore. He's definitely been the stable star and possibly still is.

Mufhasa affectionately known as King Mufhasa, from Lion King fame, is now happily retired to a life of luxury.
Like all horses, Mufh loved to run, and he ran like the wind, and was very competitive on the race track, but at home his is a big soft teddy bear who just loves to cuddle and hug – at home he is nothing more than a loving friend, a pet to us. For all his competitiveness on the race track Mufh has never threatened to bite or nip anyone, he just muzzles in when being cuddled, a great mate and friend at home. Mufh goes off to shows, with his “life-time keeper and mate” Amy Doran, and does get miffed if other horses are taken off the farm (to a show) and he is not taken with them. He loves being on show, and remains a very proud and loving horse.

Mungo won 2 races for Grant Searle. After retiring he spent many years in Foxton on lease as a riding horse before moving briefly to the hills behind Trentham and then back to Hawkes Bay also as a hack in Poraiti. Unbeknown to us the lady leasing him was tragically kicked and killed by another horse. Her husband, not aware of the lease arrangement contemplated putting Mungo down before placing him with a friend as a mate for her horse. After tracking Mungo down he now resides in Patangata with his old mate 25YO Sway and her 22YO brother King’s Bard.

Irish came to me in January ‘22 after John Mason sadly passed. The first time I met him was when he came to the Manawatu to race. John phoned me asking if I could strap for him. He was such a dude. I never thought he would end up in my paddock. Three weeks after he arrived, we went to a small causal show jumping day and he was super. Sadly he had a paddock accident that took months to heal so he was on holiday recovery with lots of carrots and chats with his little human. In November he did his first inhand show and placed in all classes. In March ‘23 for his first ridden show we got placed in most of his classes. A week later he brought home Champion from the Masterton A&P Show. I’m so very grateful for this boy to come into my life as a sport horse. He has taken it in his stride to even be a kids lead rein pony for my two year old. The plan is to do a bit of everything and have fun and most of all make John Mason proud this season. Sparkles (Mytsharp) came to me from a friend last year. She has the most amazing, chilled out temperament, hard to believe sometimes that she won a race or could even go that fast! She destroys all stereotypes related to chestnut thoroughbred mares for sure. Since racing she has had a foal which is now two years old (not a full thoroughbred). Sparkles spends her days relaxing, going to low level shows and pottering around the paddocks hacking out with me. A very much loved member of our family who fits in perfectly.

Narvick, renamed to Roo when I bought him off event-stars mid 2019 is a 7 year old gelding. In the 18 months I’ve had him he’s done a bit of everything from Polocrosse chukkas, adult riding club, cross country, trekking and a lot of hunting. He took to hunting like a duck to water & in his first season was titled a full wire hunter. Jumping wire, hedges, doubles, tape etc. He goes from hunting next to the master to cruising at the back of the field during the hunt. Even been hunted by a 70 year old woman. He is a very special wee man and we love him!

Navarro had one start on the track and showed no desire to ever be there again so he was retired as a show hack to Wanaka. He had a bit of attitude so ended up with the Beattie family, on a trip home from Wanaka Show. He had quite a good buck initially but poking him up a steep hill soon sorted that out. After having some lessons in attitude readjustment, he had success on the show jumping circuit and has also done a bit of hunting. His main focus at the moment will be show jumping but long term, he will end up a hunter. He’s now a very nice horse.

We've owned AJ for about four months and since then we have been showjumping. So far this season he has been out to a couple of training days and we have begun attending ESNZ shows. He has been jumping 1.10m and I hope he'll go on to compete in Junior rider. He has a great nature and is an absolute gentleman. I am only 14 years old, he is 16.3h and so reliable and trustworthy. Being a big fella he doesn't tuck his legs up as quick as my 15h horse so it keeps me on my toes riding him differently. My nana was a competitive rider, grandad trains racehorses, my auntie has been a jockey, and my dad is an FEI show jumping course designer so riding horses is definitely in the blood! We all go away competing in showjumping together most weekends. Story shared by Annabel Hutton
Update: Archibalds New Zealand Jumping & Show Hunter Championship 2nd in the Ties 1.10m warm-up round, 2nd overall in the Ties 1.10m South Island series finals. Won the Horse 1.05m on Sunday.

I was given this little pocket rocket off the racetrack as a 3YO. He is 15.1hh and the best little horse in the world! He has won champion ribbons as a Park Hack, loves show jumping and has most recently become a NZ Mounted Rifles Charitable trust mount. We have travelled the country attending parades to honour those soldiers who fought 100 years ago. One of them my grandfather Patrick Rock. Negev (Sox) marches in tight formations at walk trot and canter and is required to stand at attention for long periods while in front of crowds of people. We have even been passed by a military tank and had artillery guns fired close by! Sox has also been a calming influence for other OTTT we have given a home, a true gentleman.

I am looking forward to more fun years getting out and about and then enjoying a long retirement together. He is a real character and very affectionate and I can't imagine life without my thoroughbred unicorn.

Anne Beattie saw this horse as a yearling in the paddock at Middlemarch and asked the owner (Lindsay Carruthers) if she could have him as a hack once he retired from the track. Nibbles (as he was known) never really wanted to be a racehorse! At his first start he refused to go in the gates and was subsequently scratched from the race. He had a few more starts but didn’t show much. He retired to the Beattie Property and became a hunter and show jumper for Kate Beattie. He is a very elegant horse but has plenty of attitude. He can jump beautifully and has had many places on the jumping circuit, but equally, if he’s having an off day, it doesn’t always go so well!! He and Kate often have to negotiate the terms. Lindsay named him Snob as a foal as he often wanted to do things on his terms!! That is still the case to some extent today!!!!!

Novatech raced 11 times for 2 wins and 2 seconds. He was a bigger boned type of horse and we showed him in the Riding Horse Section. He did have a buck in him and from time to time would catch you off guard in his early education. He was a very powerful type and excelled in this section. His only season showing took him to Horse of the Year where he was Newcomer Riding Horse of the year and Runner Up open riding horse. His feet were sadly the reason we didn’t proceed with him any further. He went to the South Island to a friend until his death.

I was lucky enough to pre train On the Rocks before his last prep and we did lots of different things including farm and beach rides, some jumping and also competing him in the Love Racing thoroughbred class at Cambridge A&P, so I put my name in the hat to give him a home when he retired. I was so fortunate that they trusted me to give him a home, but I think it was more the fact that he adored my young daughter (and she adored him) so I’d say he will end up her pony club horse in a few years. However while we are waiting for her legs to grow, I get to ride him and he’s been to a dressage day and a couple of jumping days, placing in everything to date. He loves jumping! He is a pleasure to do anything with and of course that is a testament to Ballymore Stables. I’ve worked with hundreds of off the track (and on the track) thoroughbreds and he is the most placid and easy going I’ve ever come across. I pinch myself daily that he’s in my paddock.   Story shared by Jo Stevens

I’ve owned Harley for around 3 years now. In that time he has come along leaps and bounds. Off the track he was difficult at times. Luckily he was taken into the care of a lady who took her time to retrain him. Today, Harley is a super plodder, carrying my 12yo brother around the eventing circuit and out on the hunt field, for hunter trials etc. At times he can still be difficult and has his quirks, but we work around them. He’s like a grumpy old man that only likes minimal attention when HE feels like it, but nevertheless, anyone who meets him falls in love with him. As seen in the photo of Harley winning the straight gallop at Hunter trials 2022 with my brother, he still loves a good gallop and still shows quite some determination.

Renamed The Ripper, this Battle Paint gelding is an enormous talent with an attitude to match!
Beyond brave and honest he is rather like the all star quarter back. Brawn, good looks, athletic and talented just not always the brightest!!
I never come across anything he can't do, but rather like a bull in a China shop on the way! He has all the ability to be a world class event horse and has certainly found his happy place jumping fences. He has several staff members but not a lot of friends!!! Somewhat the yard stud who thinks he is simply better than the rest!
The bigger the challenge the more talent he seems to have. I am excited by his future and feel like world wide there isnt a better event horse out there.

Outram came out of the White Robe Lodge stable and is now on the Hunt field with Otago Hunt. He is a very versatile horse, coping with hounds, very closely at times. Outram has to go out on his own a lot, gather in loose hounds, cope with a stock whip being flicked off him, occasionally cracked as well. Otago Hunt has many OTTTB's in their field and the majority make lovely safe hunters for a range of riders once they know what hunting is all about. Outram had a rider new to jumping and a horse new to both hunting and jumping and was a very successful whip's horse by the end of the first season. Both the horse and rider caught the hunting bug!!

Since I’ve had him we have hacked around my grandparents and neighbouring farms, attended a low-key sports day and been on a few beach rides. Our lovely hack Huey, by Red Giant, was found by Claire Simpson who came across him whilst being prepared for racing. Unfortunately, for the trainer, racing wasn’t his forte but due to being a beautiful type, Claire thought he would make a lovely small hack. I was only 13 at the time but very tall and ready for the challenge so I gladly took over the reins. We started slowly with him, lots of low key outings, in-hand shows and spent a lot of time building up his condition. He is now very consistent and tries his absolute hardest in the show ring. He is the stable favourite, he waits at the gate every morning for breakfast and is a real sweetheart.

After she returned to her owners in 2020 we brought her and she is now semi-retired in a large paddock living her best life. She enjoys going for hacks out around the farm and loves to see new things around the farm.

A typical TB..wiry, quick, bold and brave. He is the over thinker of the yard. Always on the go and trying to predict the future! Intelligent and sharp he doesnt let a lot of things go! Can hold a grudge and likes to prove everyone wrong. Cat like athletic and a true over achiever. More the code breaker than a front line soldier Jerry has presence and x factor in a fiesty small package. Definitely the student sitting up front always producing more than asked for and being very offended when not given an A plus for everything. He is best in quiet company and with routine. Likes eating small and often and is naturally slight. Better being kept busy and enjoys a varied workload with plenty to do.

Once my beautiful girl of 16yrs young finished her career on the race track she became my showing and level 1 dressage horse and enjoys getting out and about, always coming home with ribbons. She is special to me in so many ways and such a sweet girl to be around, not your usual hot headed red head that people make them out to be. Will fall asleep in the ring and pony kids around the ring, she comes running over when she sees me. Just a beautiful soul and one who I could not be without.

He finished the season competing at 1m and has a very exciting future ahead! My horses all enjoy regular beach rides and hacks through the dunes  I just love working with thoroughbreds and find them so easy to deal with.

At the moment I feel he is a bit young to do too much work, even though his racing career is over at the grand old age of 3. I lunge him and ride him around our farm. He is a gentle soul and seems a lot older than what he is. I think he likes the laid back lifestyle of farming life and hopefully he will stay in that mode. He isn't fazed by tractors, machinery, livestock and tankers.  He doesn't like to be on his own though but I'm sure he will improve over time. I am hoping that in time he will be my dressage horse, he has some lovely paces and a good attitude so fingers crossed. He came from EventStars and has a forever home with me.

This photo is of my amazing 24YO horse Pythagoras, last month at NZPCA Eventing Champs where we competed as a DC (105) for Otago Southland. Pythagoras started out as a steeplechaser where he raced 17 times before being retrained as an eventer. He competed up to 3* level and has also helped inexperienced riders up the levels of eventing with confidence. Pye has never stopped at a fence, he would rather crash through it and carry on! Next season I plan on competing at Springston Trophy in the 105 and then stepping down to 95cm to finish of his 25-year career!

Winning multiple champions her show career unfortunately was cut short due to a trucking accident that took over a year to heal. She has done many lambing beats and dockings. And will even carry sheep, she is the most sure footed and well balanced horse I've ever ridden. At nearly 21 she is enjoying her retirement life on the hill with the most spectacular views of the Hawke's Bay.

I have been blessed to have the love of one of the many off the track TB’s. Red Oasis, now 23 and looking very much the magnificent equine that he is, bold, strong, handsome and very much a part of my life since he was rising 9. BIG Red is my everything. We embarked on eventing (not to my liking as l’m a bit of a sook and l’d just had a c section, hmm not recommended) Show jumping (hmm still too scary over 65cm) Dressage, (hmm loved the outfits but wasn't very good in the driver’s seat) So, we did A & P shows and ribbon days, now that was more my thing. Forward to 2013, l decided to bake him some tasty wholesome treats and before l knew it, he is a house hold name nationwide with Big Red's Stable Snacks, available nationwide in 50+ stores. . He melts my heart every single day l look at him bold, strong and magnificent 💖 my life, my soul my once in a lifetime racehorse. This is my boy Barry. He is a 7YO gelding with a very special personality. I’ve known Barry since he was a 2YO and have had the opportunity to watch him blossom. I was then presented with the chance to purchase him last year and snatched it up immediately. He loves his food and cuddles, but most of all he loves to goof around, his favourite thing is to pick up his feed bin or cover in his mouth and shake it round. At this stage his main role is in hand showing and natural horsemanship, however the plan is for him to be an eventer. He absolutely loves to jump and has beautiful movement. He really is a big softy who loves people. I always leave with a smile on my face after being with him and I can definitely say it wouldn't be the same around here without him.

This is Ripslingers 2nd season competing as a showjumper after retiring off the track and she’s currently jumping successfully to 1.25m. We are hoping to step her up to 1.30s next season. Ripslinger's background : she was bred by my parents Jonathan and Karen Sprague (Totaranui Stud) They raced her Mum Tim Goose (who won 4 and was 3rd in Auckland Cup) Ripslinger was late to develop, very weak, but trained by Lance O’Sullivan and Andrew Scott, they noted she could really gallop but needed more time … on her spell at Totaranui I decided to have a ride and never gave her back. She’s a very talented jumper with a brilliant attitude to her job, she just loves it.

Rocket was very promising young race horse who unfortunately suffered a serious injury at age 2. Rocket did his post injury rehabilitation at the Oaks Stud where I worked at the time. Once Rocket was cleared by the vets to move on to his next phase in life I decided to take him on as a show horse. I'd had always loved Rocket throughout the time I had spent with him at the stud as a youngster. He was always quirky, cheeky and just a neat horse to have around. Rocket has been with me now for 7 years and will stay with me for the rest of life. He has been very successful in the show ring and just loves anything with all the attention on him! Some days we wonder if Rocket realises he is horse because he fits more into the Labrador category ~ will eat anything!! Off the track thoroughbreds make the best companions and he is a very special member of our family.

Her racing career was cut short by an injury, so therefore the decision was made to rehome her. Rosie was rehomed by Cambridge horsewoman Gina Schick. Satin Flag retired to his owners paddock for several years before being acquired by the Beattie family. A young local girl needed another horse so Mia Webster sold her 14hh pony Cowboy and took Satin Flag on. It was a big jump going from a made pony to a 16hh thoroughbred off the track but Mia has done a great job - hacking him, attending nearly every hound work out, trotting behind the hound pack as they get fit and now making it to the Otago Hunt field. We all know the "Raise The Flag" offspring have a lovely very natural jump and Mia has taken Satin Flag quietly, riding him calmly through the gates, keeping him out of harms way and now he is becoming a lovely field hunter with only half a season's hunting. He will head to the show jumping circuit over summer.

My mare, Doll, missed out on being a race horse. I bred her on my lifestyle block from leased mare Sayyal. She was quite a late foal and was too small to go to the Karaka sales as a yearling. Subsequently, I decided to keep her as a riding horse and she was professionally broken-in for this in late 2018. Doll loves the "cowboy challenge" obstacles and is very clever and a quick learner at this. In 2021 I hope to get her competing in the Cowboy Challenge field. At some time in the future I may allow her to be a broodmare, but she is perfectly happy just being a very spoiled and happy pet.

If Sparty was a person he would be one of those annoying people who is good at everything. He has won titles in showing at Horse of the Year, placed in the National Young Event Horse, carted me around my first 1* horse trial (now 2*) and still spends a lot of time switching hats between Eventing, dressage and showing, being perfect and picking up wins and placings as he goes along. The most amazing part about him is how genuine and kind he is though. He is a true unicorn and will be with me forever. My horse of a lifetime ❤️.

I have had Riley for 3 years. Riley has got me back to riding and jumping after a 30 year break. She is a very opinionated mare & certainly lets me know if she is not happy about what I am doing! However she also adjusts her behaviour to how I am feeling and to the level of riding I am at and always keeps me safe. She indulges me by allowing to wear a Christmas hat at Christmas and dressing up as a unicorn to make a young girls birthday dream come true. Theo is my number one man, mr reliable to say the least! I got him as a project way back in 2015 and 7 years later he’s still safely tucked in the paddock. He’s a real mummy’s boy and doesn’t tend to tolerate or go very well for other riders, if someone new hops on he just tries to follow me around instead. He’s done well in the show ring and show jumping too, but finds cross country too scary so hasn’t done much eventing. He loves a smooch and raspberries being blown on his muzzle. Here is my story of my OTTB Stand Tall aka Midget ♥️
Midget was trained in Cambridge by Ralph Manning where he was very successful winning many races. I have owned Midget for 2 months now and in that time he has quickly adapted to being showjumping mount. Midget has the best laid back nature and will turn his foot to anything he is asked to do. I can’t wait to continue our journey further.

Incendium, or Blaze as he is affectionately known, never officially made it to the track but has become a very successful all-rounder. He is currently eventing successfully at 1* level, competing up to 1.20m showjumping and was a part of the 2022 EquiMatch Trans-Tasman Young Rider Showjumping Challenge. He has had a dabble in dressage including winning Champion Preliminary Horse at Canterbury Dressage Champs, although this isn’t his preferred discipline! Blaze is an adored and special member of the family, he is full of personality and just loves to be with people. Although he can be spicy, he is always my Mum’s first choice for hacking out, you wouldn’t find a safer horse to ride around the busy roads. Blaze is unaware that he is actually rising 17 and still has the enthusiasm of a horse half his age! He will forever have a home with me.  Story shared by Georgie Bolton

He couldn’t win on the flat – he could hardly beat the ambulance home. But put jumps in his way and he could fly despite detesting obstacles in front of him. He was named Al Bundy by the kids on Janice Webster’s Wanganui equine course. They were all on course when he won the first of two steeplechases. He also ran fourth in the 1998 Great Northern from Kevin Myers stable after Janice nursed him back from a bowed tendon. Janice rode him on all North Island legs of her annual Great NZ Treks beginning when he was a sprightly 18-year-old. At 29 Al still looks a million dollars.

I have a 2012 vintage retired racehorse who raced under the name Stradivarius (his sire was Stravinski and dam Kapsjoy) I have renamed him Marshall Art. He only retired from racing about a year ago and has been with me for about 4 months. He is currently having time off until I start him for dressage and hacking next spring.
Marsh is very much enjoying his retirement with his new best friend and fellow Derp, (who is the same age) Zephyr and Zephyr's mother (Dam) Merlot who fell in love with him the day she met him. Marshall is charming, very sweet natured and a total cuddle bug. He is much loved.

Ross is by Sakhees's Secret out of Strike A Rose, however he only trialed as he was a touch too slow! Ross is only a small fella at 15.2hh high and has developed so much! I bought Ross in November 2020 after I retired my 22 year old from Dressage and he hadn’t done a lot and was still quite green. He has now got Dressage Champions and Reserve Champions under his belt in his first year of dressage and has recently competed in his first Premier League where he got nice scores at Level 1. He is loving life at home with the other 6 horses and we have a really good partnership and I know Ross has so much potential in the Dressage area to move up the ranks! Ross is such a smooch and I can’t wait to see what the future holds for him.

Winner of 10 races including Listed and Group 3 as well as placing in Group 1, 2 and 3 races, Sultan does not need a lot of introduction. He was the very first horse I rode when I started riding work for Shaune Ritchie back in 2017 and I loved his quirky attitude from that first day. Both of us retired from racing at the same time, which seemed quite fitting, and he's been with me ever since. I would like to call him a Sport Horse but in reality, we just do whatever he feels like, a bit of hacking, schooling and jumping with some shows and training days in between. He's extremely versatile and enjoys the retired life of luxury. He has done his job on the track and deserves to enjoy his days in true retiree style, which if you are a horse, consists of eating, drinking and tearing covers as a sport!

He has competed in Australia twice in the Adelaide CCI5*L competition (equivalent to Badminton HT in the UK) placing 2nd and 4th and was one of only about 10 horses in the history of the competition to finish under the optimum time on the Cross Country phase.
His name Just Kidding is a reflection of his cheeky, sharp but fun-loving personality.

I've had Tiger since Jan 2017 when he made the big journey from Auckland - Southland! And it has been a Rollercoaster ride to say the least. I've often been told I should write a book about Tiger due to him teaching me more than I ever thought possible through a very expensive journey of veterinary education. He never does things in halves and keeps me on my toes! Since I've had Tiger we have done a range of things from hacking out bitless and bareback, eventing, endurance riding, trick training and everything in between, he is true all rounder. He is whole heartedly my heart horse, a 1 in a million and has a forever home with me. I can't see life without him at this point. We are looking forward to next summer for the eventing season!

I purchased Chev from Laura Knight shortly after he finished racing. Chev raced successfully with Laura until he was nine years old as The Beama. He has been renamed to Notting Hill for his sport horse career. I bought Chev for myself to get back into riding after a 10 year break. While he can be quite spooky at times and has earnt the nickname of Mr Spook, he is generally very safe to ride and has given rides to many children and beginners. Chev has the most amazing nature and everyone (human and animal) are his friends. He is a very friendly horse who loves a good scratch, hacking and splashing in the sea. I compete with Chev in dressage and showing and my daughter jumps him in show jumping and round the ring hunters.

We hope to progress through the levels over time. I am fairly new to polo but have spent my life riding horses - at the age of 46 I decided polo looked fun and took it up! In early 2021, I joined up with the Women's Chukkas practice group at Auckland Polo School. I met Handel there, and got to use her for practice - she was super! Fast, easy to maneuver, always has her eye on the ball and has the sweetest personality. She became available for sale so I decided, why not? She has moved onto our property in Kumeu and absolutely loves her stables, pampering and bossing around the younger geldings in the paddock! I hope to play her for a few more years at lower levels and then if she is still willing and able, to ride her at Muriwai Beach and in the forest.

Ubetcha departed the racing stables in March 2015 and became a mate for young horses at the Wingatui track. He lived at the track. In 2018 he became a hunter for Anne Beattie’s family. Daughter No 1 Jayne rode him as she knew him from track work days and he wasn’t the easiest of horses! He settled in well and went on to join the show jumping team. He successfully competed for a season before being spotted by Kaye Buckley who wanted to purchase him as an eventer. The sale went through as Jayne was to be heading overseas for her big OE and Beattie’s had plenty of other horses on the go! Then Covid hit, no overseas travel, Ubetcha decided he didn’t really like dressage and would rather return to the Beattie’s SJ team, which is now where he is back competing with lots of success, and acting as a huntsman horse over the Winter months with Otago Hunt which he loves.

Hugo is known as the class clown and I have been a part of his life since a weanling. He competed at Horse of the Year as a 2 yr winning the Supreme Youngstock Sport Horse of the Year at which time he was in full work at John Bary's track and we showed him in the afternoon. He had 4 raceday starts and everyone who rode him said he was special and a super horse to ride as he was so balanced with a long raking stride. However Hugo didn't have the desire to be a racehorse and I convinced my Partner that Showing and Eventing was his wheelhouse. My daughter Simone has recently come back to competitive riding and he has already been to two A & P Shows winning every class entered and qualifying for HOY 2021 in Newcomer Hack and Hack of Year title. He recently completed Beyond the Barriers with placings on the flat and jumping. He's just the coolest horse with such a laid back attitude.

Wade came to me in September 2020 when he was unwanted by his current owner. I was told he was a standardbred, 13-14yo and had previously been a trekking horse. As his 2” long winter coat came out it revealed thoroughbred brands and it turned out he raced as Wade and is 20yo. In need of a little TLC and still a work in progress, he has thrived since arriving. Renamed Lucky (by a friend) for finding his way to my place, he will be a companion and hack for the Burgundy 2yo I have. I’m not sure who will be babysitting who though as Lucky stresses on his own, while the 2yo doesn’t care less!

After a glittering racing career in NZ and Australia, Who Shot TheBarman is back home for a well-earned retirement in Whangaehu. There are many versions on where the name came from, so here's the true story. The O'Leary brothers had an Aunty Julie, a real character and regular visitor to the farm and she did enjoy a tipple. But by gosh when her glass was empty, the cry would be "WHO SHOT THE BARMAN" This was to signal one of her young nephews to jump to task and offer the refill. Where to now for Barry? He has returned to Humphrey and Fiona's farm where in the new year, they plan to host a welcome home gathering for family and friends. He is in the big paddocks with a group of up and comers. The hope is that some of his great racing ability and toughness will rub off on them. Barry will tour the rest of the family's farms too. Everyone is so pleased to have him home.

Wise Men Say (James) is a 2009 gelding bred at White Robe Lodge and bought at the South Island sales by Raymond and Mark Connors. He won 9 races- 1 on the flat- 1 hurdle and 7 steeplechase races winning $339, 950 over his career, including, McGregor Grant steeples 2017, Great Northern steeples 2017 and 2019 and Wellington steeples 2018. I have ridden him since he was a three-year-old and he has always been a stable favourite of mine, he has a big personality and is playful like a big kid in the paddock and in his work at times. He is having a well-earned winter off and will start being ridden again during the summer. He will be hacking around the farm we live on and doing small local shows with the aim of hopefully hunting him next winter.

Falcon can be a snob, he demands the finer things from his human. He has a very kind heart and keeps an eye on all animals and humans on the property. His best mate is Landshark a mini pony, together they provide hours of laughter. His favourite human is Vic, a friend’s autistic son. They have a magical bond. Falcon is very enthusiastic about being ridden and gives anything a go even a cowboy challenge, he always has lots of fun even if the rider isn’t feeling as enthusiastic. He won the Christchurch Casino Spring Classic in 2014.

YANKEE DANCER (Bill)

Performance
Born:
1992 Gelding
Location:
Waikato
Present Role:
Retired
Bill was bought as a yearling and trained by my Aunt and Uncle in Ruakaka. Upon being retired he was reschooled by my aunt as a sporthorse. Unfortunately he developed an Ethmoid haematoma as a young horse and was unsuitable to be sold on so I was lucky enough to be gifted him as my first hack when I was just 11 coming off my first pony and him only 8. He was an exceptionally talented horse all round, very much wasted on my young self but took me to many wins in dressage and Eventing to open level, and won countless ribbons. He taught me an endless amount and was always so safe. He is retired with us, soon to be turning 29 so has been in our family for 28 years. The first thoroughbred love story of many to come in my life!

Zerbreeze, known to me only as Muffin until recently, came to me from Lisa Latta’s about 7 years ago as a lead horse and companion to Café Culture. She quickly became invaluable to me, travelling to the track and races with CC and suffering his multitude of antics when we used to hack the roads and farms nearby. Normally well behaved, she made an exception when we raced at Awapuni, her old home track. There she turned into a “beast”, buck kicking and dragging my friend around. These days, at 17YO, she is in the retirement paddock, still with CC and they are inseparable, she is the boss though (like most females). She is most useful now for keeping my troughs clean as on hot days she empties out the 400 litre trough, splashing it over herself to cool down.
