EXPLODE
Made his debut over 1200 metres and raced greenly near the back of the field in the early stages. Produced a big finish for second, only three-quarters of a length from the winner, and clocked the fastest last 800m, 600m, 400m and 200m in the race.
Rotorua, May 10
PORTLAND
This two-year-old filly took on older maiden opposition and acquitted herself very well with a second placing. She did plenty of work in front and lay out around the home turn, but still fought hard down the straight and was beaten by three-quarters of a length. She has scope to improve.
Trentham, May 10
GUM BASHER
Badly blocked in the early part of the straight, she flew late for an eye-catching second. Her last 400m and 200m were the fastest in the race. Two of her three career wins have come on synthetic, so don't be put off if her next start is on that surface.
Wanganui, May 11
CHELSEA ROSE
Made up good ground to finish second, only half a length from the winner and more than two lengths in front of the third placegetter. She ran the fastest last 800m, 600m, 400m and 200m.
Invercargill, May 11
POLLY'S GURU
This five-year-old has now placed in four of his six starts, and he was an unlucky second here with the fastest closing sectionals in the race. He looks close to an overdue win.
