RACEFORM & Paul Claridge
3 September 2020

TIMARU - Friday 4th September

LETHAL - Race 1
Lethal is well-bred Northerner from the inform Te Akau stable with 2 trials and a race under his belt. He has a tidy barrier draw with a talented jockey on board, ready to strike.

TE RAPA - Saturday 5th September

SPRING DELIGHT - Race 4
She is up against some handy stayers in Race 4, the Rating 95 2100, but there’s no denying her right to a win after solid efforts in her two starts to date this preparation.

WANGANUI - Saturday 5th September

CHOSEN PEAK - Race 5
Chosen Peak is shooting for four on end in Race 5 and with a three-kilo claim reducing her weight to 51kg she may just have the edge on the other form runner, Deerfield. Two of her recent wins have been over the same course and distance.

WINGATUI Sunday 6th September

FLYING SARDINE - Race 4
Flying Sardine made a winning return to the local scene at her last start and there’s no reason why she can’t repeat from a handy place in the handicap for Race 3.

Wanganui jumps preview

5th September 2020

Race 1        SPORTS BAR OPEN HURDLE          2400m

A handy field of hurdlers will gather on Saturday for the Opening Event and there are several realistic chances but for me, there is a standout quinella here in the form of AVE MARIA and the outstanding dual jumper IT’S A WONDER. One suspects that the red-hot Shaun FANNIN would have had the difficult task of choosing the ride on both horses and it’s probably his strong ties to the strong MYERS team that ultimately swayed him towards AVE MARIA but for good reason, as you can’t deny her overall Course and Hurdle Stat’s which are simply outstanding (in fact she is undefeated over hurdles at Wanganui having won both of her hurdle runs here having beating the promising GRINNER and THE COSSAK at her most recent run here).

That aside her task on Saturday will not be easy. The inclusion of stablemate ZETANGLE has compressed the handicap in favour of the free-running IT’S A WONDER and with James SEIWRIGHT also claiming another kilo off his back one suspects he will be out in front and awfully hard to run down.

Others to consider;

Stablemates ZENTANGLE and SENASSY (who will only carry 62kgs after the claim of Dean PARKER) are very capable of exploiting any errors by the top 2 contenders as to the Wheeler trained ABACUS who was contention before a mishap in the Waikato Hurdles.

Suggested Bet:  Play it safe with a quinella of AVE MARIA and IT’S A WONDER. If you want to go 1-out I suspect IT’S A WONDER will be at slightly better odds.

Race 2        WANGANUI CHRONICLE OPEN STEEPLECHASE          3800m

With the appearance of the Grand Master WISE MAN SAY the weights have been compressed and excluding THE BIG OPAL there is now only a 2.5kg spread in the handicap for the remaining runners.  With this in mind and a slightly shorter trip, DES DE JEU get’s another chance at redemption. It may have been that he was in need of the run at Manawatu two weeks back but I expect him to again race close to the pace and press on at the business end (and provided his jumping remains tidy) I see him scoring that long-overdue victory for his connections.

I’ll throw OLD COUNTESS in for second purely because of her outstanding jumps record at Wanganui; she seems to grow an extra leg when she jumps here and she could be at false odds. She goes in ahead of MACKLEMORE but a word of warning, don’t leave WISE MAN SAY out of any of your multi. He was huge last time at Manawatu and although the odds are clearly against him here in terms of his weight and the likelihood the 3800m will be way short of his best  you can never count this Champion out; all of his runs over fences this time in indicate he is right on track for the big ones at Ellerslie.

Suggested Bet: Staying with DES DE JEU.
