Kick start the Wellington Cup Carnival with a showcase of Black Types racing, including the Group 1 JR & N Berkett Telegraph and Group 1 Devan Plastics Levin Classic and a quality support programme. It’s a day for timeless classics and sophisticated indulgence, a classic summer raceday where we pay homage to the finest our sport has to offer. Such as the IRT No. 1 Trentham Stakes, famously won three times by the hall of fame Castletown who also echoed this hat trick beating the Wellington Cup field an unbelievable three times.

Clubs NZ Family Raceday

It’s the day for the entire family to enjoy. Swap your heels for flip flops and your fascinators for sun hats. With a fun park of FREE kids entertainment and activities on offer, mum and dad can relax in the stunning sunshine and have a flutter on the horses.

Family Day is our community day and it’s a firm tradition in the Wellington diary. 

Don’t forget the kids fashion in the field, it’s hugely popular so make sure you get in early to register.

NZCIS Wellington Cup Day

Cup Day is one of the standout days of New Zealand racing and the jewel of the Wellington Racing calendar. Featuring a banquet of class act racing, fashion and a festival zone – there’s no party like it.  This premier day features the Group 1 Harcourts Thorndon Mile and is headlined by the infamous Group 3 NZ Campus of Innovation and Sport Wellington Cup and not forgetting the Group 3 New Zealand Bloodstock Desert Gold Stakes, it’s a hugely anticipated day on NZ’s finest summer racing surface.

The $250,000 NZCIS Wellington Cup, which has been run annually since 1874, is staged over 3200m and tests the stamina and heart of the leading stayers, while the $200,000 Group 1 Harcourts Thorndon Mile (1600m) attracts New Zealand’s premier milers and the leading fillies will tackle the Group 3 Desert Gold Stakes (1600m).

Racing is only a slice of the attraction of Cup Day, with the glitz and glamour of fashion and annual social highlight with friends making this Wellington’s favourite summer party! To add to the electrifying atmosphere this year will be Superbad Soul Section playing from 3pm at Brewtown Craft Beer Village. 

The opportunity for stakes and winnings doesn’t stop with the racegoers, there are fantastic prizes on offer to all guests gracing Cup Day. Henkell Fashion in the Field supported by Rydges Wellington has an amazing prize pool including a year's fresh flower subscription from Henkell, two night's accommodation at Rydges Wellington, a Mercedes-Benz Wellington escape and a gift from Trelise Cooper.
