Strangles – Immediate Actions for Trainers
Immediate actions you need to be taking from today as a Licensed Trainer in regards to Strangles concerns:
- Take the temperature of every horse accepted to race or trial twice daily, everyday, in the morning & evening, starting from today (7 July)
- If you are based in the greater Waikato region, ensure any accepted runner has undergone a Serum Amyloid A (SAA) Test, which has provided a negative result
- Record all temperature readings, SAA test results (where required) and the health declaration on the NZTR Strangles Temperature Monitoring and Health Declaration Form.
- In order for a horse to be able to race or trial, they must have had 5 straight days, plus race morning, of acceptable temperature readings (time allowance for this week only)
- Be prepared to present this signed document upon request by a Steward at any race or trial meeting for any horse that is engaged that day
- Failure to present this document, signed and filled out correctly, will result in the immediate scratching of your engaged runner

NZTR would like to also remind Trainers regarding Rule 320B - notification of horse movement from their stables:
PROVISIONS RELATING TO ALL TRAINERS AND PRE-TRAINERS
Trainers are responsible for the administration of their stables.
320B A Trainer or Pre-Trainer must:
(1) within 24 hours of a horse coming into their care and control, notify NZTR in the prescribed form (if any), and ensure that the horse is correctly identified in that form or other means of notification;
(2) within 24 hours of a horse ceasing to be in their care and control, notify NZTR in the prescribed form (if any) and ensure that the horse is correctly identified in that form or other means of notification;
(3) within 24 hours of the death of any horse under their care and control, notify NZTR in the prescribed form (if any) of such death.
