60 Seconds with Chad Ormsby
What made you want to pursue a career in racing?
Just a young fulla at the time, in love with anything horses.
What do you love most about racing?
The winning feeling!
What has been a career highlight for you?
Every time I train a winner is a highlight. So much time, effort and sacrifice goes into producing a horse to win.
Do you have a favourite horse you’ve trained or ridden? Or both?!
Auckland Cup winner, Pentane would have to be an all-time favourite from my riding days. He was almost human. Training-wise, it always seems to be the difficult ones.
Do you have a favourite trainer/jockey you look up to?
I haven't ever really looked up to anyone in particular, but I respect those that do things on horses that others can't – Opie Bosson and Lisa Cropp are both freakish.
Favourite New Zealand track?
Ellerslie.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve received?
Mind your business.
If you weren’t in racing, what would your job be?
An actor. I actually chose my apprenticeship over going to an acting workshop.
When you're not working, how do you like to spend your time?
Being with my family and rodeo.
If you could switch lives with someone for the day, who would it be?
My fiancé Aliesha (no further comment).
If you could invite three people to dinner, living or dead, who would you invite?
My dad, my grandfather on my mother’s side (never met him) and Michael Jackson.
Favourite TV show?
The Blacklist.
Favourite food?
Pork bones and puha.
