60 Seconds with Robert Wellwood

The Races
10 April 2019
What made you want to pursue a career in racing?
I have been into horses since day dot, however I found a real passion for racing in particular after closely following Black Caviar’s career. At 15 years old I can still remember watching her win her first start so impressively and I was hooked from then on.

In your short time training, you have enjoyed some great success. Which is most special to you?
I will never forget my first winner ‘Dream On’, that was a real highlight. In saying that, no matter what day of the week or what track it is at, it is always special to get winners for good owners.

What is your favourite raceday in New Zealand?
New Zealand Bloodstock Karaka Million night at Ellerslie. It is such a good event enjoyed by so many and it’s awesome to see the public enjoying the sport we all love!

What race would you love to win?
It's a tough choice between the Cox Plate, Melbourne Cup and Golden Slipper. They’re all hugely prestigious races and races I think all trainers strive to win. If I had to choose one it would be the Melbourne Cup, it has so much history.

If you weren’t in racing, what would you be doing?
I have a Finance Degree, so I suppose something in a bank… although that sounds rather boring to me so I will stick to racing for now!

Who is your favourite horse?
I try not to have favourites, we have a lot of nice horses in the stable. But if you twisted my arm you’d find I have a bit of a soft spot for ‘Hanger’, he is a real character.

What is the best piece of advice you’ve received?
“Take care of the small things and the big things will look after themselves.”

If you could switch lives for someone for a day, who would it be?
I wouldn’t mind switching with Tiger Woods for a day and inviting the boys out for a round of golf.

What TV series are you currently watching?
I just finished watching Making a Murderer.

What is one thing people would be surprised to know about you?
I own a pug.
