The Grand National Festival of Racing got off to an outstanding start last weekend, but that was just the warm-up for what’s to come at Riccarton Park on Saturday.

All eyes were on the big three features, the Sydenham Hurdles (3100m), Koral Steeplechase (4250m) and Gr.3 Winter Cup (1600m), and there was elation and plenty of emotion with the results that unfolded.

The Central Districts took a clean sweep, kicking off with a professional display out in front by hurdler Dictation in the Sydenham, which has catapulted him into equal-favouritism for the $100,000 Hospitality NZ Canterbury 135th Grand National Hurdles (4200m). The son of Tavistock will have a task on his hands in the big dance, contending with two-time winner Berry The Cash, and a host of other chances on the minimum weight.

Jumping fans had been long awaiting the match-up between Jesko and West Coast in the Koral, and with his speed on the flat, the former proved too strong and justified his $1.50 quote for the $200,000 Racecourse Hotel and Motor Lodge 150th Grand National Steeplechase (5600m). West Coast lost no admirers with his third-placed effort and will be better-suited by Saturday’s extreme distance, while Captains Run split the pair and shortened into a $6 hope for the National.

While the jumpers will take centre stage on the final day of the carnival, a number of top winter gallopers will also appear on the flat, with a $45,000 stake up for the Open 1800m and Open 1400m events.

We may still be feeling the chill of winter, but that hasn’t stopped the winter fashion during National Week, and patrons will have the chance to put that on show with on Saturday with the Winter Fashion In The Field. Held at the Tea House, the FITF competition has a range of sections to suit all racegoers, with Best Dressed, Tradition of the Hunt, Best Suited, Millinery and Style Awards.

If you’re looking for that extra motivation to enter, take a glance at the prizes on offer, with a three-night stay at Scenic Suites Queenstown, tickets to the Skyline Gondola, and a $1,000 Prezzy Card all included.

Tickets to watch this fabulous annual showcase are available for $70pp, which includes a reserved seat, first drink and light refreshments.

Closer to the thoroughbred action, general admission tickets are on sale for just $25pp, which offers grandstand access and the perfect view of the beautiful Riccarton jumping circuit. For an elevated raceday experience, dining is available in the Balmerino Room, with $45 securing a buffet meal (and half price for children between 5-12).

Riccarton’s hospitality suites were a popular option on Saturday and these fully-contained areas on the top level of the grandstand are able to be purchased again for $175pp, with perks including a food and beverage package, television viewing, outside grandstand access and steward service.

There is something special about Riccarton during National week, so be a part of the historic 150th running of the National by heading on course this Saturday, 9th of August.
