Joyce Brings Up Her Century In Style

Joyce Muller has seen a lot of races. And is still watching and punting on thoroughbreds as she celebrates her milestone 100th birthday on 20 June.

Opunake-born Joyce has a family history in both racing and rugby and still takes pleasure in watching Trackside and placing bets via her son Noel who is a frequent visitor to the Fitzroy TAB in New Plymouth. While Noel takes betting a little more seriously Joyce is still backing winners in her own right and even branches out on occasions to take the odd treble.

The recent meeting at Taranaki saw Joyce do particularly well with local trainer Allan Sharrock winning the first five races on the day.

Joyce is related to former successful Taranaki trainer Bernie Mann and is a sister-in-law to long-time top trainer from Hawera the late Wiz Moseley. Joyce is hoping her nephew, veteran jockey Terry Moseley, can ride a winner at Oamaru to help her celebrate her 100th birthday. Other notable relations include Jazz Muller, Joyce’s brother-in-law, who gained a reputation as one of the hard men of the All Black front row back in the late 1960’s.

Joyce plans to celebrate her big day with family and friends and a luncheon in New Plymouth, all while keeping one eye on the action at Oamaru.

Happy 100th birthday Joyce!
