Henry Martin and Get The Beat enjoyed one final hurrah, claiming victory in the LOVERACING.NZ Pony Scurry at Tauherenikau. The duo previously competed in Show Jumping up to Mini Prix level and had one final dream to win a pony scurry before Get The Beat was sold to a new owner. We caught up with Henry to learn a little more about his experience.

Tell us a bit about your speedy pony

I rode Alfie (AKA 'Alf')in the LOVERACING.NZ Pony Scurry at Tauherenikau. Alfie is a 14.2 pony who has competed in Show jumping up to Mini Prix competitively with me! He has now been sold and has won another Pony Scurry with his new owner.

Why did you want to enter the LOVERACING.NZ Pony Scurry?

At the time I was selling Alfie and wanted to tick off another dream of mine, which was to win a pony scurry with him.

Did you have any connection to racing before competing in the Pony Scurry?

I go to a lot of the races and mum has a couple shares in some racehorses, so I’ve always been at the races!

What were you thinking while racing down the Tauherenikau track?

I was thinking something along the lines of “dang this pony is fast”, which he is because we absolutely smoked everyone in my heat.

Who helped you on the day?

My girlfriend Charlotte because she gave Alf a pep talk and my mum because Alf loves her heaps. Kirsty Lawrence was a great help letting us know what to expect and making sure we were ready to go at the right time.

What was your favourite thing about the day?

My favourite part of the day was winning because who doesn’t love winning. It was also pretty cool winning by 4 and a half lengths. But getting the chance to gallop on a proper racetrack on raceday and in front of big crowds of spectators… That was so cool!

Do you have any aspirations to work in the racing industry in the future?

I am possibly too tall and heavy to have a riding career in racing which is a real shame as I’ve always wanted to ride track, but I’d love to look for other options.
