The $1000 farm horse that won the Gr.1 Melbourne Cup - Kiwi

5 November 2023
From a $1000 horse used to move farm stock to a Gr.1 Melbourne Cup hero, Kiwi's remarkable dash to victory in the 1983 Melbourne Cup will always be remembered as one of the greatest triumphs within the race's long standing history. Purchased as a yearling for just $1000 by sheep farmer Snow Lupton and his wife Ann, with a training regime which often involved rounding up stock on their Waverley farm he would go on to win the race that stops two nations. A complete outsider, jockey Jim 'The Pumper' Cassidy sat last majority of the running. Named after a flightless bird - Kiwi flew home the last 200m and soared straight past his competitors.
