Kiwi raider Sacred Satono will attempt to guarantee his place in next month’s A$10 Golden Eagle (1500m) when he heads to Randwick on Saturday.

The Bruce Wallace and Grant Cooksley-trained runner will contest the A$1 million Silver Eagle (1300m) and will be ridden by regular hoop Michael McNab.

“Michael knows the horse and he had done a good job on him,” Cooksley told TAB NZ.

Sydney isn’t new to Sacred Satono, who had a three-race campaign in autumn. While unsuccessful, Cooksley believes that initial foray across the Tasman has been a major asset for his spring raid.

“He is very good, he is nice and relaxed, and has settled in well. He was here about five months ago, so he knows the joint,” he said.

“When he got over here, he knew exactly where he was, it suited him well.

“As I have always said, he is just like a pony, nothing really worries him, and he is very good to look after.”

Sacred Satono had two preparatory runs in New Zealand for a win and a second and Cooksley has been pleased with the way he has progressed since.

“His first run was a really good run. He got a bit further back than what he should have, but he got home well and his last start Michael (McNab) said he went around nice and easy, it was like a trial for him,” Cooksley said.

“He has come through it really well. He has improved with it, so we will see what he does Saturday.”

The Golden Eagle at Rosehill on November 4 is the four-year-old’s main aim, but he will need to perform well this weekend to gain a berth in the rich feature.

“It all depends how he goes on Saturday but if he runs in the first three he is guaranteed a run in it, but we will just see how it goes,” Cooksley said.
