Five-year-old gelding Satness scored a strong win in the Midway Handicap (1600m) at Randwick for trainers Robert and Luke Price, providing returning jockey Brock Ryan with a first metropolitan success since a five-month layoff with a shoulder injury.

The hardy son of Sweynesse was given a perfect ride just behind the leader and was resolute late, staving off the challenge of fellow Kiwi breds Elettrica and Loving Cilla.

Now the winner of four of his 34 starts with a further 15 placings, a start in the A$500,000 Four Pillars Midway (1500m) at Rosehill on November 4 could now be on the cards.

“It’s great for Brock, he gave him a lovely ride. We drew a nice barrier to get a soft run but full credit to the horse, he is just so tough,” Luke Price said.

“He has been in work for a long time and we gave him three or four days off after Rosehill the other week and he didn’t like the paddock at all so we said come back in mate.

“There is a race on Golden Eagle Day – the Four Pillars – it might really suit him, depending whether I can keep him up for that much longer.

“We can send him down to the farm for a few days in between and it could be a good goal, but he will tell us.”

Ryan was delighted to be back in the winner’s circle at Randwick for a stable he has long been affiliated with and was pleased with the brave effort of his mount.

“They put on a good clip early and my horse started to get up on the bridle at the top of the straight,” Ryan said.

“I was able to get off the leader’s heels and work into it when I wanted to. He was game late and I felt vulnerable at the 100m but once that horse got to me, he found again.”

Bred by Luigi Muollo’s Explosive Breeding Ltd, Satness is by Novara Park Stud stallion Sweynesse out of the placed Mossman mare Satanya, who comes from the family of multiple Group One winning sprinter Atomic Force.
