Trainers Shaun and Emma Clotworthy have called time on their outstanding money-spinner Justacanta.

“He’s been retired, he’s getting on a bit now and he’s done a great job for us and wasn’t an expensive buy off Gavelhouse,” Shaun Clotworthy said.

The now nine-year-old won three races from David Greene’s stable before he was offered via the online platform in 2019 and the son of Per Incanto sold for $6,000 to an ownership group, which included Clotworthy’s wife Emma.

He doubled his winning tally from his new quarters and was then sent to Patrick Payne’s Victorian stable.

Justacanta won the Gr.2 Linlithgow Stakes (1200m) and the Listed Paris Lane Stakes (1412m) and also placed in the Gr.3 Moonga Stakes (1400m), the Gr.3 Chatham Stakes (1400m) and the Listed Thomas Lyons Stakes (1400m).

He returned home last year and subsequently ended his career with earnings of more than $580,000.

“He’s still sound and was getting up in the weights, which makes it very difficult in New Zealand and he wasn’t competitive in Australia anymore so we retired him. He was a very good horse.” Clotworthy said.
