Message from Bruce Sharrock
Last week we were reminded once again just how precious life is.
While we all understand the risks our jockeys take on a daily basis, it was a tragedy that only four months after losing Taiki Yanagida, we have lost another of our own on the racetrack.
Megan Taylor made her mark on New Zealand racing in only a short time, she had made a fantastic start to the season with seven wins, almost surpassing last season’s total of eight. A recent interview by Go Racing’s Matt Allnut, following Megan’s win aboard Raposa Rapida, gave a great insight into Megan and how her love for horses underpinned her passion for our industry. She spoke proudly about what drew her to racing and was humble in the support and opportunities she had been given by those around her. On behalf of NZTR we offer our sincerest condolences to the family and we are thinking of them at this tragic time.
Once again, I was proud to see how our industry responded. We have showed our ability to be strong, support each and come together when we needed to. I would like to make a special mention of Andrew McKerrow - Salvation Army Racetrack Support Chaplain - for the support he provides to our participants at times like these and to Andrew Lacy and our community of jockeys as they look out for each other.
As we know our racing calendar ramps up as the country heads into the festive period. I personally am looking forward to the busy period and getting on track, with key dates of The Grand Tour Racing Festival at Boxing Day at Pukekohe Park and New Year’s Day at Te Rapa. In addition, we have an abundance of regional racing across the country and some iconic days that sees the community engage with racing and hopefully the weather plays it part to showcase our great sport across the summer months.
It was pleasing to see that our Halberg Awards application has seen James McDonald nominated for his amazing achievement in being crowned the ‘world’s best jockey’. We only hope that the panel understand the rare talent that James is as the best in the world, continues to wave our flag strongly on the international stage and we continue to watch with pride as he dominates
Finally, I would like to take the opportunity to wish you all a Merry Christmas and I hope you get the chance to relax and enjoy time with family and friends.
