Meet Zach I’Anson: Stable Foreman & proud Strapper of Two Illicit
Ahead of Two Illicit’s tilt at the Group 1 Fiber Fresh New Zealand Thoroughbred Breeders' Stakes at Te Rapa this Saturday, we caught up with Zach I’Anson, foreman at Kingsclere Stables and regular strapper of Two Illicit.
How did you first become involved in the racing industry?
For as long as I can remember, my grandfather had trotters. At around 22-years of age, I left my country home in Mildura and ventured to the big smoke, Melbourne. I worked for Peter Moody for nearly eight years, which eventually lead me into the UK. New Zealand is now where I call home.
What do you most enjoy about your role as foreman at Kingsclere Stables?
The most enjoyable part of my role is watching horses progress from early age into professional athletes.
You’re the regular strapper of the Group 1 winning mare, Two Illicit. Tell us about her.
She can be a bit of a handful before the races – I try to find a quiet spot away from all the commotion as soon as we arrive and just keep her happy. If we can snag a yard under a tree it’s always a good help. Once she’s saddled up, she knows it’s game time.
How are the nerves heading into Saturday’s Group 1 assignment?
I don’t really get nervous, there is no need to on raceday. All our hard work is done.
Any pre-race rituals/ superstitions?
I have a couple! I never shave the day of the races and won’t get a hair cut a week before. I will also have someone else head a horse in for me if we draw barrier 13 or are number 13.
What is your favourite racing memory to date?
It would have to be one of my first spring carnivals – a packed Flemington crowd is a real spectacle! Outside of that, Might and Power winning his Melbourne Cup off the front. He was untouchable on his day.
What would you say to someone looking to enter the racing industry?
The hardest part of the job is getting out of bed, the rest is a real pleasure! They say find something you love in life and you will never work a day in your life. If you love horses or racing, this is for you.
