60 Seconds with Robert Dennis
What made you want to pursue a career in racing?
I grew up with my family involved in racing but also forged my own interest once I went to uni.
What do you love most about racing?
The winning feeling is hard to top especially when the horse has been hard work or a bit of a project to even get to the races. Seeing my owners and their friends/family enjoying the thrill of winning a race is also pretty cool.
What has been a career highlight for you?
Hard to split from The Sparkle and The Lustre running 3rd and 4th in the 1000 Guineas in my 3rd season of training and being the first horses I broke in or Out Of The Park - she arrived a 19 start maiden and in 5 months had won 4 from 7, including setting a track record at Wingatui and a Group 3 Breeders Stakes win.
Do you have a favourite horse you’ve trained?
I always had a soft spot for The Style (Cindy), she was just a battler like me.
Do you have a trainer you look up to?
Maybe earlier on but now I can appreciate every trainer has a different set up and scenario and we are all just trying to do our best.
Favourite New Zealand track?
Wingatui, the best horse usually wins there. Growing up I used to get a buzz when we would go to Riccarton Park too.
What is the best piece of advice you’ve received?
Do what works for you.
If you weren’t in racing, what would your job be?
I have a degree in economics and business management, but I think I'd enjoy being a pro golfer!
When you're not working, what do you spend your time doing?
Relaxing with Aleisha and our dog, Baxter.
If you could switch lives with someone for the day, who would it be?
Michael Scott.
If you could invite three people to dinner, living or dead, who would you invite?.
Warren Buffet, Roger Federer, Jack Whitehall.
Favourite TV show?
The Office.
Favourite food?
KFC.
What’s one thing people would be surprised to know about you?
People are often surprised at my age, 29.
Who should we be keeping our eye on from the stable this week?!
Ocean Point and Savezar.
