Q&A with Samantha Collett
Samantha Collett, AKA the Cup queen, has won the last two editions of the prestigious Auckland Cup and will be looking to make it three on the trot this Saturday!
Why riding? I’ve been fortunate enough to have a family involvement in racing since I can remember, and my love of riding has been something I’ve had since I was a little girl riding ponies.
What makes the Auckland Cup such a prestigious race? The atmosphere on the day and the history behind the race.
You've ridden a couple now... What's the key to riding an Auckland Cup winner? Lots of patience and keeping your horse in an even rhythm.
What characteristics do you like to see in a staying horse? A relaxed demeanour and a smooth action.
Your first win in the cup came onboard the $4.20 favourite, Glory Days. Your second came with the $40 outsider, Roger That. Does riding a favourite add pressure for a jock? It certainly does, but you have to keep just focussed.
What advice would you give to any budding young jockey, currently dreaming of riding in a race like the Auckland Cup? Always follow your dreams and never forget that having a passion about your job will make getting up at stupid o'clock that much easier!
Sam is booked to ride Robusto in the Barfoot & Thompson Auckland Cup® at Ellerslie this Saturday. Be sure to either get on-course or tune in and cheer them on!
