Q&A with Vinnie Colgan
Amongst New Zealand's most talented jockeys, Vinnie Colgan has ridden more than 1100 raceday winners, 125 of those being at group or listed level and six of those being the prestigious New Zealand Derby.
How did you get involved with racing? My family raced horses when I was young. They had horses with Jim Gibbs and Ken Thompson from Rotorua. I had some sort of interest as a youngster.
Most memorable moment on a racetrack to date? Winning my first three Derby’s are all very memorable moments for me: Royston in 1995, Zonda in 1997 and Hades in 1999.
What's the key to winning a Derby? There’s no secret to be honest, I’ve just been so lucky to have ridden some very good horses.
Best horse you've ridden? I’ve always said the best horse I've ever sat on is Zonda, without a doubt.
Past or present - one you wish you could throw a leg over? Why not the one and only Phar Lap!
Hobbies outside of racing? I don't really have too many interests outside of racing. I know one thing - I’m no good at golf!
You can catch Vinnie this weekend at Vodafone Derby Day. Although racing will be held behind closed doors, you don't need to miss out on the action! Stream Trackside live on LOVERACING.NZ.
