New Zealand Bloodstock Karaka Million Series: How does it work?
Buy a horse one year, race it for $1 million the next – sounds pretty good to us!
The Karaka Million Series offers graduates of the New Zealand Bloodstock National Yearling Sale the chance to race in two $1 million races, open only to horses purchased from the sale. The Karaka Million 2YO is open to horses purchased from the national yearling sale a mere 12 months earlier, while the Karaka Million 3YO Classic is open to graduates from two years ago. What’s more – every horse entered in the Karaka Million Series is eligible to line up in the Karaka Cup for the remainder of their career, worth $100,000.
We know what you’re thinking – ‘plenty of horses go through the Karaka sales ring, they can’t all line up in one race?’ Both races have an order of entry, something all owners and trainers hope to see their horse top! The Karaka Million 2YO order of entry is determined by the prize money eligible horses have won. The top 14 earners get a starting gate. The Karaka Million 3YO Classic order of entry is determined by New Zealand Thoroughbred Racing’s domestic ratings. The higher the horse’s rating, the higher they are in the order of entry. The same goes for the Karaka Cup.
Simply put, purchase a horse at the New Zealand Bloodstock yearling sale, enter said horse for the Karaka Million Series and keep everything crossed that they make the cut!
