Koinei te Wiki o te Reo Māori - it is Māori language week! As one of our three national languages, the opportunity to learn Te Reo Māori is a unique and special part of being a New Zealander.

We’ve gathered some simple words and phrases so you can show off your Māori language prowess next time you’re on-course!

Horse – Hōiho

Jockey - Tioke

Race – Reihi

Trainer – Kaiwhakangungu

Farrier - Kaihaeana hōiho

Favourite – Te tino pai

Starting gates - Tīmatanga kēti

Parade ring – Porowhita hikoi

Bet – Petipeti

Stallion – Tāriana

Apprentice - Tauira mahi

On the nose - I runga i te ihu

There’s only one - Kotahi noa te

Go you beauty! - Haere koe ātaahua!

My money's on (horse name) - Ko aku moni kei runga ia (ingoa o te hōiho)

I love your outfit/ dress! - E aroha ana ahau I tō kakahu

I’ve heard good things about (horse name) - Kua rongo ahau i ngā mea pai mō (ingoa o te hōiho)

Keen for some food? – Kei te hiahia kai koe?

What time is the next race? - He wā te wā e whai ake nei?
