Sam Collett on that glorious Auckland Cup win
How does the Auckland Cup rate in terms of prestige for jockeys in New Zealand racing?
The Auckland Cup is a highly sought after the race for most jockeys. Partly because of its rich history and also the atmosphere and build up around the day.
What made your Auckland Cup victory so special to you?
Apart from it being my first group one, it was very special to have many of my family members and close friends there to share the win with.

What made Glory Days the perfect Auckland Cup Horse?
‘Gloria’ (as she is affectionately known as) was a dream ride. She was always strong to the line in her previous races. Her racing pattern of getting back in the earlier stages of a race and keeping out of trouble also helped a lot.
What is the one thing that is key to riding a horse in the Auckland Cup?
Getting your horse in a comfortable rhythm (3200m can be considered the ultimate staying test!)
The word 'jockey' translates to 'boy' in the Scottish language. Do you feel males have a 'leg up' (excuse the pun!) within the industry?
Not really - I think we are very fortunate here as females; we get fantastic opportunities in New Zealand racing. We also have so many tough woman jockeys here, which I hope is inspiring to young Kiwi women coming through.
What do you hope to achieve in the future as a jockey?
I would love to win another premiership (or two!). I will also be trying to get the opportunity to travel more overseas and be as successful as I possibly can to fund my expensive hobby (of riding).
