Meet the lasses behind racing's superstars!

The Races
8 May 2019
With Mother's Day fast approaching, we figured there’s no better time to highlight the superstar mares behind some of the best horses in the world. Check out the (equine) mums we know will be ‘dam’ proud of their babies achievements!

Vegas Showgirl
She’s only the mother of the best horse in Australia (and arguably the world) - Winx! Vegas Showgirl won 7 of 35 starts herself but has shown her real worth at stud with Winx, who won 36 races, 33 consecutively, 25 at group 1 level and over $26,451,174 in prize money during her stunning career. What’s more - Vegas Showgirl is a New Zealand bred horse!

Stylish Bel
The mother of the currently ranked number one racehorse in the world (and Kiwi boy!) Beauty Generation. Beauty Generation was purchased out of the 2014 New Zealand Bloodstock Select Yearling Sale, before heading overseas to race in Hong Kong where he has been nothing short of spectacular. This season, he has dominated in Hong Kong, winning the Hong Kong Mile, Stewards’ Cup and The Queen Silver Jubilee Cup (among others!). Winner of almost NZD$9,000,000, Beauty Generation sure is doing his family proud!

White Gold
Another New Zealand bred lass, who is mum to one of Australia's most exciting 3-year-olds - Mystic Journey. White Gold herself only won two races however Mystic Journey has strung together an impressive record in a short space of time, winning the Australian Oaks before going on to win the richest mile race in the world - the All Star Mile, worth AUD$5,000,000 earlier this year.

Urban Sea
She was a champion in herself, winning France’s most prestigious race - the Prix De I’Arc de Triomphe in 1993. She is the mother of Epsom Derby winners Sea the Stars and Galileo, with the latter going on to be one of the most successful sires in the world, producing champions such as Frankel, New Approach and Minding.

Meleka Belle
She ‘mum’ to the one and only Melody Belle. Melody Belle stormed onto the New Zealand racing scene when she won the Karaka Million in 2017 and has not stopped since. She has won six Group 1 races, five of which were won this racing season. It looks like there will be plenty more to add to that tally too - the superstar mare appears to only be getting stronger in her racing!

Flying Floozie
Another Kiwi mum who’s progeny have proved themselves worldwide. She is best known for being the dam of multiple Group 1 winner Starcraft, whos wins include the AJC Derby, Queen Elizabeth II Stakes, Mudgway Partsworld Stakes, the Hawke’s Bay Horlicks Challenge stakes… the list goes on! In 2014, Starcraft was labelled as the Australian Champion Three Year Old and in 2005 the World Champion Older Turf Miler. Flying Floozie is also the dam of Forum Floozie, a stakes winner and dual Group 1 placed. She was deservingly crowned New Zealand Broodmare of the year in 2004, 2005 and 2006.
