The Team Rogerson-trained Gift of Power was sent out a short-priced favourite in the Carters Ashhurst Pohangina Cup (1200m) at Awapuni on Friday, and was only just able to get up and deliver for her supporters.

The four-year-old daughter of Power was forced to settle outside pacemaker Passing Shot, with the Stephen McKee runner setting a blistering early speed.

The pair went to battle down the straight, with Gift of Power able to get the better of her opponent late in the piece, winning by a short neck, with a further length back to Hugo The Boss in third.

While the race didn’t completely go to plan for her charge, jockey Rosie Myers was pleased to get the win aboard the Group Two winner.

“She loves it here, with the tight turning track,” Myers said.

“It didn’t go to plan A, we were meant to lead. Obviously Passing Shot got to the front, he scooted along quite well and was tough to get past.”
