Prom Queen’s return imminent

Multiple stakes winner Prom Queen is set for a raceday return at Kumara next week after suffering a minor setback recently.

The Ken Rae and Krystal Williams-Tuhoro-trained mare, who is on lease from Windsor Park Stud, injured herself during a thunderstorm late last year and her connections took a cautious approach with their star four-year-old.

“We had that really bad thunderstorm down here and she hurt herself,” Rae said.

“She’s never been lame it’s just a surface injury that got a little bit infected. We probably could have raced her but we had to treat it.”

Rae still holds Australian ambitions with Prom Queen and said he may target Queensland winter racing with his mare.

“I want to take her back to the Gold Coast again for the winter,” he said. “Our lease runs out in August but Rodney Schick said we might be able to race her in-foal, so if that works out we’ll have another go at the Stewards’ Stakes.”

Prom Queen will likely be joined on her Queensland trip by stablemate Major Tom. The eight-win gelding is back in work following a break after his disappointing last-place finish in the Gr.3 New Zealand Cup (3200m) at Riccarton in November.
