$1 million Triple Crown Bonus

NZTR and the Auckland Racing Club (ARC) have announced a bonus of $1m for any horse that can complete the triple crown of the Club’s feature staying events, the $200,000 Group 3 Laser Plumbing Te Puke City of Auckland Cup (2400m) run on New Year’s Day, the $100,000 Group 2 Go Racing Syndications Avondale  Cup (2400m) run on Saturday, 18 February and the $500,000 Group 1 Barfoot & Thompson Auckland Cup (3200m) run on Saturday, 11 March.

The bonus underlines NZTR and the ARC’s commitment to staying races and to New Zealand’s flagship staying  event, the Group 1 Barfoot & Thompson Auckland Cup run over the iconic 3200m distance.

This announcement follows the recent injection of prize money into New Zealand’s other iconic 3200m events, the Group3 Christchurch Casino New Zealand Cup and the Group 3 Wallaceville Estate Wellington Cup.

Cameron George – CEO of the ARC commented – “the ARC acknowledges the support of NZTR regarding our three feature summer staying races.  The bonus will add further excitement to what will be a fantastic summer of racing at Ellerslie.”

New Zealand has a long history of breeding Australasia’s dominant staying horses and this tradition has continued in recent years with NZ bred horses’ dominating in Oaks and Derby races on both sides of the Tasman.

Today’s announcement is just one of a number of measures NZTR is developing in order to ensure that New Zealand’s iconic staying races remain as strong as possible.
