60 Seconds with Paul Wilcox
Paul Wilcox - CEO of the Auckland Racing Club
Q: Ellerslie’s big day is just around the corner with the Boxing Day races, what do you think makes them such an event for Auckland?
A: Definitely the racing, but also the fact so many family traditions continue, being “the day at the races” – it’s great to see a new generation at the track.
Q: If you had to pick one race across the Christmas carnival, which is your favourite?
A: The Cambridge Stud Zabeel Classic – and boy this year it is shaping as a real goody.
Q: What is one of your earliest memories of the Ellerslie Christmas Carnival?
A: I was still at school and myself with bunch of mates were coming up the races and stopped before and after at the Red Fox Tavern – never forget the big bottles of Lion Red!
Q: Previous years have seen the gates shut around Race 4 on Boxing Day, what are you hoping for this year?
A: Gates shut before race 1!
Q: The racing will be the focus on the day, but what other events can people expect to enjoy if they make it out on course?
A: 1. Fashion 2. Stella Artois activation 3. R18 event “The Paddock” and 4. the sought after party in Cuvee after the last
Q: If you could have any 3 people to dinner who would they be?
A: Mr John Magnier from Coolmore (legend), Antony Bourdain (amazing chef, stories would be good), Sir Peter Vela (legend)
