Christmas - Rituals, reindeer and... racing! While most of us are slowing down, Christmas is the peak time for the racing industry. With 22 racedays a week either side of Christmas, there is a raceday for everyone! Check out our breakdown of some key racedays over the upcoming Christmas period.
Matamata Christmas at the Races - 19 December
It’s the day that brings Matamata to a halt! Head down to Matamata Racecourse for an afternoon of fine hospitality, christmas cheer and great racing. Indulge in one of their many hospitality packages or pack up the chilly bin and enjoy a boot picnic! What better way to spend a Wednesday afternoon after work?
Awapuni Christmas at the Races - 22 December
The Christmas cheer will continue at Awapuni Racecourse. You’re in for a day of great group level racing, featuring the group 2 Manawatu Challenge stakes and group 3 Manawatu Cup. Awapuni will provide you with a Christmas party to remember - and that’s a promise!
Ellerslie Boxing Day Races - 26 December
Arguably one of the most glamorous days on the racing calendar! While fashion is at the forefront of this day, the racing is certainly not outshined, with the group one Zabeel Classic and group two Eight Caret Classic being run. A tradition for over 160 years, Boxing Day races at Ellerslie Racecourse has cemented itself as an iconic event on the social calendar.
Wingatui Boxing Day Races - 26 December
Fancy something a little more low key? The Boxing Day races at Wingatui Racecourse are a long standing tradition for many Dunedin families. Pack up a picnic (this is the perfect opportunity to use the rest of that Christmas Ham!) and head down to the track for the ultimate family day out.
Ellerslie New Year's Day Races - 1 January
Kick off 2019 the right way - at the racetrack! Dress to the nines and indulge in a bubbles with friends or take the kids and enjoy an entertaining family day out. From group 1 racing, to fashion in the field, to free children’s entertainment, this is truly the raceday for everyone! With over $1million worth of stakes, you’re in for some of the best racing New Zealand has to offer.

Hastings Interislander Summer Festival - 1 January
Swap out the suit for sandals and enjoy a day of great racing accompanied by exquisite local food and wine at Hastings Racecourse. The kids will be taken care of, with free children’s entertainment including tug-of-war and sack races, leaving you to relax and enjoy your day in the Bay!
Tauranga Interislander Summer Festival - 2 January
If the head’s feeling a little sore on the first, Tauranga Racecourse on 2 January is the place for you! Unwind in the sun (with bubbles in hand), while the kids take part in the free children’s entertainment. Be sure to take plenty of snaps and use the hashtag #thisissummernz!
