News In Brief
Trip to suit Gris Dame
Improving filly Gris Dame is expected to relish a step up in distance at Ellerslie on Monday.
She turned in a bold run when third in the Gr.2 Eight Carat Classic (1600m) and is in excellent order for the Gr.2 Stella Artois Royal Stakes (2000m).
“She went a big race after she had us scratching our heads with the previous run,” co-trainer Jamie Richards said.
“The stock of Reliable Man look very exciting and she’ll appreciate the 2000m.”
Ardsley Stud will offer a yearling half-sister (Lot 169) to Gris Dame by Sacred Falls during the Book 1 Sale at Karaka on January 28.
Guineas for smart 3YO
On The Rocks will shoot for consecutive black type wins at Ellerslie when he steps out there on New Year’s Day.
The Alamosa three-year-old led all the way to claim top honours in the Listed Trevor Eagle Memorial (1500m) and on Monday will attempt to add the Gr.2 Jamieson Park Auckland Guineas (1600m) to his record for trainers Mike Moroney and Pam Gerard.
A yearling half-sister (Lot 777) to On The Rocks by Tavistock will be offered by Wellfield Lodge in the Book 2 Sale at Karaka in February.
Another talented three-year-old in the stable has enjoyed time off since his runner-up finish in the Listed 3YO Salver at Ellerslie.
“The Boy Wonder has had a few quiet days and he was entered for the Levin Classic, but we may instead head toward the Waikato Guineas,” Gerard said.
Bright future seen for Felaar
Stephen Marsh has tipped the Ekraar four-year-old Felaar as a horse to follow.
“He’ll be a lot better when he gets over more ground, he’s a big-striding horse and I think he’s pretty serious,” the Cambridge trainer said.
Those comments came after Felaar had come from the tail of the field to break his maiden in the Dunstan Feeds 1600m at Ellerslie on Friday.
“I was thinking the worst for a while, he was caught three wide at the back and couldn’t get in, but he won like a good thing,” Marsh said. “There’s a race coming up over 2100m at Trentham so we might take him down there.”
