News In Brief
Bigger prizes beckon smart filly
North Island targets are on the programme for the exciting Michael and Matthew Pitman-trained three-year-old Savvy Coup.
The daughter of Savabeel was a runaway winner at Riccarton last Saturday and she stepped up in grade to post another effortless win in Wednesday’s New Zealand Bloodstock Ready to Run Sale Premier (1400m).
“She’s a really good filly and we’ll be plotting a path to the Oaks and she is eligible for the Karaka Million 3YO Classic as well,” Michael Pitman said.
Weatherley gets his ton
Sam Weatherley brought up his century of career wins on Wednesday aboard the former North Island galloper Kolonel Kev at Riccarton.
The champion apprentice claimed the Bidfood Butchery Premier (1400m) on Kolonel Kev, who was having his first start for local trainer Terri Rae after transferring from Lisa Latta’s Awapuni stable.
“I’m rapt, the horse gave me a great ride. He really brought his A-game,” Weatherley said. “It was a big goal to get 100 wins and I just want to keep riding more winners.”
Patrick Erin in Cup contention
Southern stayer Patrick Erin is in the running for a trip to Trentham.
“Long term we’re looking at the Wellington Cup, we’ll see how we go in between times, but the way he settles he should run two miles,” said Shane Anderton, who trains with his father Brian.
Patrick Erin won the Ashburton Cup (1600m) two runs back before finishing third behind Lochan Ora and Nashville at Riccarton on Wednesday in the Farmers Mill Premier (2000m).
Smart debutant departing
Impressive debut winner Hezthewonforus will do his future racing overseas.
The Sufficient colt produced a commanding front-running performance to score by a widening eight lengths at Avondale earlier this month for Byerley Park trainers Bruce Wallace and Allan Peard.
“He’s going to Hong Kong, he’s owned up there,” Peard said. “He’s on the next flight on December 15. He’s a very good horse, it’s a shame to lose one like him.”
Hezthewonforus is raced by his breeder Able International, a long-standing client of the stable.
