The first day of the Wellington Cup Carnival kickstarts a showcase of New Zealand’s finest horses. The 4 feature races on the 9-race card are headlined with the majesty of our greatest sprinters in the Group 1, 1200m Telegraph, sponsored by Upper Hutt’s finest JR & N Berkett.
For the racing purist, this is an unmissable day on New Zealand’s finest summer racing surface. It’s also a perfect choice for those preferring a more gently paced occasion to Cup Day, with lesser crowds but still the enjoyment of wonderful summer hospitality and the treat of our time-honoured tradition.

Cup Day is one of the standout days of New Zealand racing and the jewel of the Wellington Racing calendar. Featuring a showcase of class act racing, fashion and finery – it’s summers hottest midsummer party! This premier day features the Group 1 Harcourts Thorndon Mile and is headlined by the infamous Group 3 NZ Campus of Innovation and Sport Wellington Cup and not forgetting the Group 3 New Zealand Bloodstock Desert Gold Stakes, it’s a hugely anticipated day on NZ’s finest summer racing surface.
The $300,000 NZCIS Wellington Cup, which has been run annually since 1874, is staged over 3200m and tests the stamina and heart of the leading stayers, while the $220,000 Group 1 Harcourts Thorndon Mile (1600m) attracts New Zealand’s premier milers and the leading fillies will tackle the Group 3 Desert Gold Stakes (1600m).
